And for everyone who is a bit depressed about epistiphilliac getting 4 offers, epi can only accept one, that means three openings still not yet filled. Congrats Epistiphilliac, may your choice be obvious so there is not too much angst about the three roads you won't be taking once you choose.

Thanks, notaprof! Fortunately or unfortunately, it's not at all obvious. Still, I'm very glad to have the choice--and very aware, as I said, that it's about the market and not about me. In a field like history or English, I would be in a very different position. (And in accounting, I might be in a similar position and be looking to make a lot more money, so everything is relative.) My fingers are crossed for all of you.

Well, I think I'm out for one job - someone posted on the wiki about a request for a phone interview a couple of days ago. Not my top choice job and a big stretch in terms of specialty, but still, sucks to know I'm unwanted.
This whole thing is making me crazy! I just want to find a job and have some sort of stability/income, and go (closer to) home. Granted, I have a good Plan B in the family business if academia doesn't work out, but I love what I do and I would be so sad to leave it. I know it's ridiculous to be even thinking about this as it's only my ABD year and I'm in a tough field, but still. I'm sure all of you understand.
Back to the grind...

I am amazed. I know that there are fewer science-related folks on here and this varies greatly by area of study, but the variation in the number of applications is amazing to me. Here are my stats: 62 applications out (all done!) 6 phone interviews 3 on-campus interviews (1 down, 2 to go) 20 applications with deadlines in the next month.
I am nervous, anxious, nauseous, and excited. I have the two-body issue, but I am hopeful that my spouse and I will find THE JOBS this year. Reading this thread makes me feel normal....b/c everyone is in the same boat.
Sciences. Second (and a half) year on the market; had three on-campus interviews last year but didn't land a job. 100+ apps sent this year (it's actually a *very* good year in my field, apparently -- I was trying to apply to fewer than last year (70ish) but there were so many more jobs I ended up sending more apps even though I was more selective). One on-campus interview (done) so far, but it's still early in my area so I'm waiting to hear for more. The rub: My on-campus will get back to me very soon letting me know their decision. Most likely it will be before I even have another interview *scheduled*. Hmm....

Minidonut, Keep your chin up (I know it's easier said than done), have you thought about doing postdocs (if you haven't already) I'm in a similar situation, I have no industry experience in business, and I've spent my entire eight year career in academia, both in admin and faculty. I'll be ABD before next summer and literally have almost no hope to secure a full time faculty job at the University level (or even community college). I figured that I would try to get a couple of postdocs to build my network and pad the research area on my resume. It's not the best plan in the world but it's a safe one. Omaraz

Keep your chin up (I know it's easier said than done), have you thought about doing postdocs (if you haven't already) Thanks for the positive vibes, Omarz. Sadly, although I've applied for scads of postdocs, I've not even gotten a nibble. Although I'm willing to move anywhere, and have applied for every type of position imaginable - postdocs, TTs, VAPs, CCs, etc. - I've gotten absolutely nothing. I have my degree, have pubs, have teaching experience, conference presentations, great recommendations and teaching evals...and nothing. Only adjunct hell. And I'm not young, so the biological-career clock is ticking away like a time bomb. Sigh.

Two weeks until I start applying. Looking forward to it, both with anticipation as well as with a certain amount of dread.

Just joining the festivities here (although definitely NOT just joining the activity!)
Applied for 7 last year, leading to 2 requests for more info, a phone interview, and no offers - although 2 of the searches were closed without hiring (turned out they were conducting the search before funding was actually approved!).
This year - the serious search:
25+ Possibles on my list so far 10 Sent in 6 more due this week the rest "in progress" - due in January
So far: -5 EEOC cards -2 forms signing away all my rights to any privacy - ever - so the SC can check not only my references, but everything anyone has ever heard about me. Depending upon how you read the form (it's pretty ambiguous), one of these seemed to imply that I've made the first couple of cuts and am now be a candidate for an on-campus interview.
I have definitely found the process easier this year; I'm more resigned to not hearing back from anyone for very long periods of time, and know that many of these may not really be legit openings - just searches that have to be conducted so they can hire an inside candidate.
I'm better off than many; I have a lectureship, although it's not actually really in my field, and doesn't pay particularly well, and doesn't reward my research and publications. So, I'm worried about becoming more and more out of date and out of touch if I don't get a job this year. Not to mention frustrated...

Thanks, Red Queen.
Is anyone else hoping that the SCs will come back from a refreshing break today, filled with energy and goodwill, and ready to contact us all with good news?

Long-time obsessive lurker here and another clone of minidonut. 9 applications (with perhaps one more possibility) MLA field, third time on job market. Sigh. 0 requests for material, interviews, etc. On a more positive note, 0 rejections so far!

Yes, I too hope that the search committees are feeling good after the break. I've got over 40 applications still in play (as far as I know), and have one interview lined-up for MLA already, so I'm hoping for a few more. I'd hate to have my whole career riding on a single interview.
