Pretty amusing, Mouseman.
Phone interview! Hooray! That means I've got 3 interviews in the works for this month. November was busy, December just before the break was busy, and then, crickets for the entire month of January. Now, February, crunch time!
If I'm on the market next year, I need to remember that and block out lots of time to travel in Feb.

I just got a call from the Dean of Dream U, and I got the job! My on campus interview was a 1.5 months ago, and I had all but given up hope. Now I'm just waiting for the Provost to call with the official offer! How on earth an I going to get work done this afternoon?
Congratulations! And I hope you didn't get a single thing done! hahaha Not because I wish ill upon you, but because I hope you were dancing like a fool all day. To follow up, I had my interview Tuesday. It went quite well. The dept chair said they'll be making the decision within the next 10 days. I was the last of the three visits. Hopefully that recency effect takes hold and they'll all remember just how much they love me. I'm getting my 2nd on campus interview set up now. Exciting times.

I really didn't get much done that afternoon at all. Glad to hear that your interview went well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Deep breath. Rehearse common phone interview questions (there are probably quite a few threads on the topic here).

Slight updates.
Job 1 made me a verbal offer as previously reported. Fairly nice offer, definitely worth considering. Job 1 is flying us out so spouse can have a look around, then we'll make a decision.
Job 2's app resulted in a rejection form letter some time ago.
Job 3 gave me a phone interview, then emailed asking for more info, which was sent. Since then <crickets>
Good luck mouseman and appollo and prephd. Congratulations weimlvr.

What are the possible meanings of "nominations encouraged" in a job posting? And if one was interested, what should they do?
Is this a sign the job is essentially an internal posting and candidates should be nominated by others in the institution (somewhat like a dept. chair job that will be filled in all likelihood by an existing faculty member)?
Are they are looking for a nomination from someone that members of the department know?
Or might one apply simply by getting one of their recommenders to nominate them for the post, followed by an application?

I think it just means that if others know of good candidates, the search committee would like to hear about them and perhaps the SC will invite them to apply.

I guess my question is: is it kosher for me to ask one of my recommenders to nominate me? It seems that this would get my application looked at little more closely.
If I don't ask them, there's no reason they'd even see the posting, even though they know I'm on the market. It's not like they're tracking job openings - I'm the one doing that.

I don't see any reason why not. I would guess that most nominations are made that way, except in those few cases where advisers search the web for job ads for their students (or perhaps people looking for senior positions happen across these ads).
