Ouch! I hear there isn't much they can do for that.

It grows back when you finish your dissertation.

I went on the market right after I had completed two chapters of my dissertation. I sent out selective applications to six schools, had three interviews and received two t-t offers. I then hustled and defended two days before I started. It can be done.

Rather than a full-scale job search "one year too early" - did anyone here simply dip their toes into the kiddie pool of the market before they were really ready?
Nope. It would be a good idea to start getting your materials together - do some draft cover letters, figure out what writing samples you'd send, get your recommendations lined up, draft a teaching and research statement, etc. But what's the point of actually sending in applications? Furthermore, there is no kiddie pool. Only sharks. I did, but then again, I'm already working full-time in my field. It was just a few selective apps sent to places that were too good to pass up. I got a few interviews, too.

Because I seriously, seriously do want a new job. Mine's fine, pays well, and all that, but, er... um... it just sucks.

I was hoping to hear from Job 1 today (last week's phone interview), but nothing.
I have lost interest in Job 2 but haven't actually withdrawn my app there.
I sent all my materials (except reference letters, which I need to arrange) to Job 3 today. Their search committee already met (right before receiving my materials) but will meet again this month, supposedly. We shall see. I don't anticipate applying for any more jobs this year.
Job 1 emailed today to tell me they are working on the paperwork to request a campus visit for me. Not quite the same as actually inviting me for a campus visit, but progress, nonetheless. Congrats and good luck!

Thanks, but I wish the ads would just. stop. coming. It would be nice to know there's an end-point, but I can reasonably expect to see ads for the rest of the year.

Good luck, indefatigable! And prephd, you may think that now, but when they do slow to a trickle (as they have already in my field) you will curse the day.....or something. Sorry, I'm jetlagged.
My campus interview went pretty well, despite the fact that the hotel they put me up in had an ancient and very noisy heating/ac unit that woke me up every 2 hours all night long. A few of them guessed, based on the fact it's early in the job search season and I've just finished, that this was my first interview, and were very encouraging. I feel like I 'clicked' with the dept atmosphere, and I'd love to get the job...but it's anybody's guess what the other candidates were like, and what the committee will actually decide. I'll know inside of a month!

I've now been in my new position for a month - it is SO much more tolerable than the corporate world. Oh Sweet Jesus, so much more tolerable. So, things are going well. The only complaint I have is that the content area/department in which I work is fairly far outside of the realm of my PhD work - however - it is still tangential on some levels - and is definitely more familiar, interesting and valid to me personally - and I'm on a campus again - and I actually get treated as a colleague, rather than an automaton. So, success mostly all around.
I'm still putting in applications for TT faculty positions, post-docs, and other full-time faculty posts in my field (of which there are only 14 or so this year). Stats so far (although next week will be the week to hear about conference interviews at MLA - I'm cautiously optimistic that having the PhD in hand will be an advantage this year):
Applications: 10 Interviews: 1 Requests for add'l materials: 0 Rejections: 0
Hope it's not too early to start posting the stats! That's one of my fave parts of the process!

Still waiting to hear back about the on campus interview. Several very positive signs so far. I really hope that pans out, because I loved them, and I want them to love me.
Since then, wikijected from several jobs and no idea why. I have no idea what makes me attractive to one school and dismissed from another. Alchemy?
