Ha! Absolutely not. It just shows initiative.

There's a certian grove o' trees that hang down really low that I think would make a perfect little snuggly spot. Never tried it, though... haven't ever been that desperate.

I just got done with day two of on-campus interview. I think it went well, and I got good feedback from some of the faculty and students. There's another candidate coming after Thanksgiving (I think I was second). Hopefully, I'll hear something (one way or the other) relatively soon.

I have never had to meet with so many people back-to-back over such an extended period of time before in my life.

I am so tired.

And now I've got to think of good responses to a couple of questions that threw me for a loop. That is, assuming I get more interviews...

Good for you.  Do decompress and process and get some rest.

Glad your interview went well Prephd! It took me all weekend to recover after my marathon.

I can understand why. Despite how tired I was, I could barely sleep last night because I had too much going through my head. I'm alternating between falling in love, which is dangerous, and indifference, which is just fake.

You and I should form a club. Luckily I have so much work and so many personal obligations I don't have too much time to dwell. I guess I wish the same for you?

Oh, yeah. I'm taking the day off to recuperate and get some things done around the house, but then it's back to work, the diss, and general craziness.

I was hoping to hear from Job 1 today (last week's phone interview), but nothing.

I have lost interest in Job 2 but haven't actually withdrawn my app there.

I sent all my materials (except reference letters, which I need to arrange) to Job 3 today. Their search committee already met (right before receiving my materials) but will meet again this month, supposedly.  We shall see. I don't anticipate applying for any more jobs this year.

Job 1 emailed today to tell me they are working on the paperwork to request a campus visit for me. Not quite the same as actually inviting me for a campus visit, but progress, nonetheless.

Trolling the job ad sites tonight, I came across a delightful position at an emerging new "company". Some highlights:

"Plan course instruction based upon approved syllabus/outline provided, to assure course content and objectives are met."

"Actively work to maintain retention in all classes taught, by maintaining accurate attendance records daily, calling all students who are absent, and recording absentee information in roster after each class meeting and communicating attendance "concerns" to the Program Chair or Academic Dean."

"Excellent customer service, organizational and motivational skills also essential."

"Qualified candidates ONLY - apply online for consideration and the potential opportunity to work with a dynamic and growing company."

After much deliberation, I think that "dynamic and growing company" is my favourite bit. Sort of like an early WalMart.

Hi all,

I am an adjunct at many CC's in California and have been busting my tail for the past couple years.  Recently I was offered a position at a CC in another state at the assistant professor level.  Am I crazy if I do not take it?  I have been thinking about it for a while now, and I am still unsure.  I am not sure how much better the situation in California will get.

I fear it will get worse for at least 2 to 3 more years.

Are there any red flags at the job?  In the other state?  Do you have qualms other than moving?

If not, jump and enjoy your stability.  You can always go back for many visits on your decent salary.

I know a longtime adjunct at a CC whose program was entirely eliminated.  He was older, with grown children.  He and his wife relocated one state over so that he could continue to teach, and they travel back to visit friends regularly.  It seems to work for them.

I think you should take the job fastelg. You will have some job security and that is important. I think you are right about California. I think things are only going to get worse there in the years ahead so escape while you can to a full time job.

California will always be there, but your adjuncting gig probably won't.  Take the job and if something comes up in 2-3 years' time in California, you'll be a better applicant anyway.

Rather than a full-scale job search "one year too early" - did anyone here simply dip their toes into the kiddie pool of the market before they were really ready?

Nope.

It would be a good idea to start getting your materials together - do some draft cover letters, figure out what writing samples you'd send, get your recommendations lined up, draft a teaching and research statement, etc. But what's the point of actually sending in applications?

Furthermore, there is no kiddie pool. Only sharks.
