Thanks for the clarification.  Days seem like months during this process :) I also looked at last years wiki and it seems like 5 weeks is the earliest I should expect anything in my field (which is interdisciplinary).  I do find it funny that they wait so long to reject you. Best of luck!!!!

Today's phone interview went well. Too well, actually. It was almost scary.

my request for more info was before the posted deadline. that was a nice feeling (to be short lived I'm sure) but, yes, YMMV depending on the field. But quick news does happen sometimes.

in my experience, 0-3 weeks after the posted deadline is normal for getting good news. oftentimes there's a flurry of activity and emails if you have a big Nov or Dec conference. beyond that, it's generally always bad news.

I suspect committees are rushing a little this year, since money is tight and deans are fickle everywhere. An Oct or early Nov deadline doesn't make terribly much sense if you're not going to get a short list in order by winter break, the best candidates get offers early

I once got asked for more documents before the deadline, and I was flying high on hope. Until I realized that the ad had actually requested those documents, and I had simply failed to send them in.

Go, Team Grassy!

i've submitted at least ten applications. i am a recovering public servant looking to get back on the academic wagon. not sure what else to do but wait it out. any advice for a scholar who has great teaching experience but little publication (at least what "they" are looking for) would be appreciated. good luck to all!

any advice for a scholar

I'll say it before anyone else does (and because you asked): please use proper grammar and punctuation.

Other than that, write.

Good luck.

Oops.  The post office is closed today for Veterans Day.

The ad says they will begin review of materials on Sunday.  Not being crazy enough to spring for express mail, I'm hoping they'll still look at it when it arrives Monday.  I think they are expecting an application from me anyways.

I just received a form from a department I applied to.  In addition to asking for basic contact info, research and publication plans and "general professional goals," and religious affiliation, it also asks:
Quote
In the space below please give a brief description of yourself.  You may want to mention some salient characteristics of personality, temperament, and nonacademic pursuits.  We will be interested in knowing something of your long-term goals in life, the values by which you are most likely to shape your life, and any other of your many characteristics which you think may help us know you better.

Is it just me, or is this pretty excessive for an initial application?  It also seems somewhat difficult to address such issues in the 2/3 page they provide to answer the last query.  I'm almost annoyed enough to blow it off, but for a number of reasons (mostly location, location, location) this would actually be a fairly desirable position for me.  Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Religious affiliation?  Followed by a string of nutty questions?  I've never seen anything like this.  Then again, it looks like they are attempting to do on paper what saner and more polite people do in person, which is to get to know you.  But given the intrusive question above, it also seems they are fishing for a response that reads: "My personal relationship with the Divine Fish has always determined my life and is the guiding star by which I make all decisions.  That has led me to believe I will be a perfect fit with Holy U. where I could participate in the molding of young minds so as to guide them away from the life choices of a young Carrie Prejean."

That application kind of sounds like one for The Real World or something. Maybe they're going to make you live in a house with other new hires and find out what happens when professors stop being polite and start being REAL.

Hmm...the sort of nutty question sounds to me like a revised version of the traditional statement of faith, as if the institution has dumped that and decided encourage more diversity while still linking to its traditional mission.

Of course, I have no idea what kind of institution you're talking about.

I got a request for add'l materials!

So now I have to come up with 2 writing samples and an explanation regarding whether I can teach each of seven core classes, with an explanation as to what my qualifications are for each.

Oh, and proposals for four potential elective courses.

And when, pray tell, does that need to be in?

I sh!t you not: "as soon as possible". That's a quote folks, underline NOT mine.

This is an opportunity.  Get off the fora and start writing.  If you can get there first you will stand out in the minds of the SC, and if you do all of these things promptly, you will look that much better than those people who only do a half-@ssed job because they're worried about other stuff.

Then you'll get a job there and realize they expect you to develop and teach all four elective courses, create and implement assessment instruments, advise three dozen new majors, and cover all seven core courses.  So, maybe this isn't the greatest opportunity, but it beats unemployment.  Good luck!

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

Ha! Thanks. I'm currently employed (thankfully), and am looking to move into a TT job. The good thing for me is that I've already been through the process you describe, so I actually CAN make a good case for being able to teach 5 of the seven core courses and have three course proposals for electives in the bag. I DO have to hone one of my writing samples a bit, which I was hoping to have time to do over Thanksgiving break, but I read the ASAP bit as an opportunity as well, and plan to get my materials in... well... asap.

Okay, just as a helpful piece of info. for the collective fora, I give to you the questions from my phone interview (for a CC position) yesterday:

*Describe your experience in {field}.
*Describe your experience teaching adults.
*What would you do if a student was disruptive?
*What would you do if a student was struggling?
*Why our school?
*What do you think it means to be a professional in {field}?
*What issue is most important to you in {field}?

Take from these what you will.
