Hey, the wife bought stamps for me recently -- flowery ones with hearts. Not Simpsons stamps. She must have seen them. Does she not love me any more? Must find divorce attorney...
Hearts and flowers? Clearly, divorce is in order. I use the Bart stamp on all the bills I pay. I wish he was pictured sticking out his tongue. Otherwise, I sometimes buy stamps I don't like, just to put them on my bills. For some reason, I feel like I am getting back at the credit card companies and the cell phone company etc. I am certain they get my bills and know exactly what I think of them. I believe in stamp voodoo. Heh. I do the same thing--ugly stamps go on bills, pretty stamps go on everything else. Most of my stamps are ugly stamps. I have to admit a weakness for the pretty stamps, though--probably a hold-over from my childhood stamp collecting days. I really like the "Kelp Forest" panel they have out now, but it's one of those that I would buy just to look at and not use. But, I digress. I would probably take my packet to the post office to have it weighed, first, and let them put one of the generic postage labels on it instead of using too many stamps (at 44 cents a pop). Heaven forbid there's not enough postage on the packet, too--nothing says "I'm a viable candidate" like sending a packet that arrives "Postage Due!"

Ah, but I had the first set of apps. weighed and found out they cost .88 to mail. Voila!

Update: I now know what I'm supposed to be planning, I've already planned it, and I have a practice run through session with friends scheduled for this week.
I am feeling much better. :)

I was discussing this with a friend and we are not sure if there is already established terminology for this:
We all know what inside candidates are. But what would you call an external candidate that has the same advantages as the internal one? To be more precise, we were discussing this position that was filled at regional university that is part of a state university system last year. Looking at their webpage, we found out that 9 out of 11 professors there have PhDs from one of the two graduate programs within that state university system. That includes the last hire.
So, what would this person be? "Inside" is only true if we consider the entire state university system as the demarcating boundary. So far we have settled on "inside-by-proxy," though that is a bit cumbersome. Anyone have any better ideas?

I was hoping to hear from Job 1 today (last week's phone interview), but nothing.
I have lost interest in Job 2 but haven't actually withdrawn my app there.
I sent all my materials (except reference letters, which I need to arrange) to Job 3 today. Their search committee already met (right before receiving my materials) but will meet again this month, supposedly. We shall see. I don't anticipate applying for any more jobs this year.

I applied to 4 T-T positions. 2 rejected me, 1 asked for further materials (fingers crossed for interview there), and 1 the deadline only just passed.

I have to share this....I just received the most bootleg looking application acknowledgment/AA/EO form from "Small State U." The envelope has different colored address stickers, no official university stamp/address etc. The letter itself is on faded xeroxed letterhead with holes punched in the top. The return card might be the best part, with the name of the AA/EO director whited out and rewritten on the front side, and crossed out with a pen and rewritten on the back side. Wow! If they can't afford letter head and new postcards with the appropriate name on them..what should I expect. What a way to start my day.

one request for add. info, one rejection on the way according to my discipline's wiki
beyond that, a lot of loud silence for the late Oct - early Nov deadline. Just a few more left to do, and nothing new has been advertised in a while.
This downturn has hit my discipline very hard. I know more recent Ph.Ds out work than in work. I'm thankful to have a position.

congrats. Your discipline must have great turn around time! I'm still waiting for late Sept/early October deadline news. The waiting is the worst!

I just looked at last year's apps.
For jobs that I was considered (i.e. got a request for additional materials or an interview at least), the time between deadline and contact was anywhere from 2-8 weeks.
For jobs I didn't get, the norm was about 3 months before (if) I heard anything.
So don't even think about getting a contact before 2 weeks after the deadline (NOT after you sent them in, but after the posted deadline). And don't get worried until at least 6-8 weeks out.
I'm in a social science field applying primarily to large, public R1-type universities, so YMMV.
