According to the wiki, I am now out for almost half of the jobs I have applied to so far (in the first round).  Terrible job market in my field this year.  So painful.  You work for so many years and then can't even get a job...  and virtually no one is hiring in my sub-field.

The sub-field trendiness issue is a bit sad.  Because most of the jobs are in the same sub-field this year and you know they are going to run out of good candidates in that sub-field while those in others will go begging.

Don't despair!  The wiki said that one of the places I had applied to had already asked people -- people who were not me -- for more materials.  Today, however, they asked me for new materials!

Was the wiki wrong?  Is the SC asking on a rolling basis?  Did they hate the writing samples that had been sent in earlier?  Who knows?  I'm just glad to still be in the running!

Hello everyone!  I've been lurking for some time and decided to come out of the shadows now that I have to face the evils of the job market.  I'm a postdoc in an MLA field.  If I don't get a new job this year, I'll be jobless.

I've got 15 applications out.  I've got a list of 22 jobs to apply for as of today.  However, new jobs keep showing up.  (Yea!)  I'm guessing that by the end of the season I'll apply for close to 30 jobs.  I hope something works out.  I'm very scared.

I'm in an MLA field.  (Gotta get a new coat!)

Oh yeah, and most of the schools asked for everything and the sink up front.  I've gotten two requests for more info.  My dream school asked for it all up front.

I'm addicted to the wiki.

My story so far:

15 jobs
11 deadlines past
4 conference interviews
1 odd invitation to chat at a conference cocktail party
1 out-of-the-running
1 pipe dream still alive

Update:

15 jobs
13 deadlines past
6 conference interviews
1 odd invitation to chat at a conference cocktail party
1 out-of-the-running
1 word-on-the-street-is-they-wrote-the-listing-just-for-an-internal-candidate
1 pipe dream ... still alive

What a long, strange trip it is.

I check the wiki regularly but it can be rather discouraging.  I can't decide whether it is helpful or not!

MLA field:

- 46 applications (43 TT, 3 Post-doc)
- 2 Requests for More Materials (nice, big RU/VH institutions)
- 3 Schools were others have been contacted (according to the infallible wiki)
- 13 Schools who requested everything upfront

By the way, I find the description of a "buzzing" sensation above to be exactly right - and this year there is no dissertation to bury myself in for the next month.

Update: 2 more requests; 3 more were I'm out according to the wiki.

Regarding the wiki: Much like everything else on the internet, it only holds value in the aggregate. A single request for materials means little; 6 requests on the same day tells you something a little more substantial (not definitive; the numbers are too small for that). Of course, this assumes that people bother updating the wiki when they see something has already been noted.

First time poster.  Long time observer.

Thought I'd join in the fun.

27 applications
8 probably fooling myself
17 deadlines past
1 post-doc app
1 lecturer pool app
10 still to go in

1 request for further materials
1 school where others have been contacted (according to Wiki)
No rejections ...yet
1 conference acceptance which has raised my spirits

Have become addicted to checking the Wiki after those here pointed it out...

23 Applications, a few additional possibilities pending.

Other than acknowledgements...not a word.

Still, I did hear through the grapevine that one SC is asking about me, so that's a sign that at least one school (not one of my top few choices, but still desirable) did not immediately put me in the discard pile.  Not much to hang on to, but I'll take it.

The Wiki hasn't put me out of the race for any position yet, and for 90% of the positions I've applied to, right now is about the earliest I would expect to hear anything, anyway.

I'm just trying to keep busy - after a few severe mood swings for my chances, I'm trying to back off from thinking about it.  Wiki once a day, at the end of the day, for me.

22 apps out (including postdocs, VAPs, TTs).

Running tally for phone interviews, requests for materials, campus visits, etc:

Zero.

7 more in the next couple of weeks.

Likely outcome:

Zero.

2nd year applying in an AHA field.  Last year no one even nibbled (I was ABD and, looking back, I wouldn't have hired me then either), but this year I really feel like a contender.  I don't feel that there is anything else that I could have possibly done in the past year to get myself in better shape for this job market.  I might still crash and burn, but I won't blame myself.

So...
- 12 applications out
- 1 very attractive job cancelled
- No news yet from the rest (though nothing happening to the wiki, either - a lot of 15 Nov deadlines)
- 4 applications to send out for postdocs in another country
- Preregistered for AHA as unemployed

My total over the past 12 months is about 50 applications and 3 interviews - two where I came second.  Close, but no job.  According to Zharkov's law I am not applying for enough jobs, but there simply have not been enough in my field.

Woohooo!

Got a call for my first (I hope "first" will be the right word, rather than "only") AHA interview at a good school. The buzzing sound just went up an octave.

Hope everyone else is hanging in there!

Aside from the buzzing, nothing but silence as of late.

And so I wait...

Make sure you update the wiki!  My wiki is still showing nothing in the jobs I applied for.
No calls, no interviews, no writing samples, no nuthin'.  Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!

The wiki in my field hasn't been updated in over a week. :(

9 apps in
1 notice that I'd made the initial cut - references to be contacted
4 acknowledgments of receipt
6 more apps to finish with more ads still being posted

My field interviews/selects later than AHA/MLA fields, apparently.  Good luck to those of you forced into the cattle-call situation.  I can't imagine interviewing under those circumstances.  I don't envy you.  In fact, I kind of pity you.

On that cheerful note, good luck to everyone!
