book won't count towards tenure...blurgh!

The short version. My first book came out last year. I started a TT job this year and the book doesn't count towards tenure. But wait, the book is coming out in paperback in January. It still won't count for tenure. As Liz Lemon says, "Blurgh!" On the upside the research requirements are minimal.

It won't "count," but, believe me, it counts.
Congratulations on coming out in paper.

When I was at Mafia Tech, I was told none of my previous pubs would count. I pointed out that they had a 5-year "look-back" rule. (This was from the accreditors.) I had four pubs while there anyway (in two years.)

Congrats on the book! If you published your first book before you even started your TT position, I'd say you'll get more than enough scholarship in the next five years.

Will be tight. I was TT for three years and then left to be with my spouse. It was during this period of visiting appts. that the book came out...and a baby.

Damn. Well, that's one way to "push" out a book. Unconventional, though ;)

So, is it tight because you'll be up for tenure in 3 years (or 2)? If so, then it doesn't make sense that the book wouldn't count because in moving up the clock they are counting your previous scholarship (or should). Unfortunately, this should have been made clear at the time of the interview. Can you work on the next book as well as a couple of articles at this point? (and how much time DO you have?)
