After reading so many of the posts outside of 'Academics in the UK'... I'm REALLY glad that the culture in the UK doesn't involve someone offering to pray for me every five minutes....

Here here.  I just read in the economist that when asked, some 35% of brits deny believing in god.  Compare that to about 5% or so of americans (if memory serves).  Of course, this may not be for everybody, but my partner and I find it very, very refreshing.  I also like how at the NHS, they ask you *if* you have a religion.

Oh, and even cooler is on job applications in the affirmative action section (or whatever they call it) how they ask for your sexual preference, *leaving a blank line*.  When I filled this in, I was very tempted to shoot for something ultra-creative...

I also appreciate how they ask for your sex on these forms, with the additional qualifier *at birth*.

God save the Queen!  :)

And the NHS (in theory) is a really good idea.
In practice, well....

I haven't seen forms like that, but they sound great.

Hmm, smart Brits - gun control!  And an absence of outrageous drug laws that ruin people's lives for possession of small amounts.

As for the Queen, could we perhaps compromise, on Freddy Mercury, Brian May etc.?

I love paying for my food in a pub when ordering. I never have to wait for a waiter or waitress to come by to pay.

I always look forward to getting back so I can have some real ale.  MMmmmmm.

For regular R4 listeners: last night at 6:30 was sublime.  Reminiscent of Firesign Theatre at its best.

Well, now that Brian May has a PhD, there is no doubt in my mind.
