I'm interested in how this discussion will proceed. Yes, we've had threads on this before on this site, but something that strikes me about online teaching is that how fast things change. This year's cohort of students are already much more savvy about setting up a proxy than last year's, for example. So I expect people who teach online will already be saying different things from the last time we had this discussion, and I would guess the students might have changed slightly too.

I have found, with my students (British so YMMV) that my participation as the lecturer is crucial. I need to show students they are being 'heard' so they'll keep up the standard of intellectual engagement. Moreover, I can model 'good' discussion interactions (not just saying 'oh I think that too' and actually engaging with the students; also being courteous). It eats up a lot of time but the good thing is I can do it in my pyjamas with coffee in hand, and this way it's a way to wake my own mind up to what we're going to discuss in person in class.
