Does anybody know if there are many other colleges/universities nearby (within an hours drive) to SUNY-Geneseo? Any comments on the place (working environment, demands for outside research funding, administration)?

You could Mapquest Geneseo and then zoom out a little to see what cities/towns/colleges are within an hour away. I think are probably several colleges and universities within commuting distance.

University of Rochester
Cornell University is a bit further (1.5 hours or so)

Also RIT, and Nazareth college.
I went to grad school and did my postdoc at the UofR. Except for the snow, I loved it there. Rochester is a pretty city, and the Finger Lakes area is just gorgeous.

As you can see from the prior posts, there are a LOT of schools in western NY state, a do-able drive from Geneseo. (BTW, someone listed the SUNY university center at Buffalo, but didn't include Buffalo State, a separate college in the SUNY system that's also located in Buffalo.)

I am all too familiar with the adjunct scene in this area, if that's what you're thinking. PM me if you want more info. This area is teeming with colleges.
Monroe Community College has the highest adjunct pay that I'm aware of, including the 4-year schools
Genesee Community College (abyssmal pay)
Finger Lakes Community College
There are several for-profit schools in Rochester as well: Rochester Business Institute and Bryant and Stratton.
There are a lot more colleges in the Buffalo area that aren't listed here. They may be a bit more than an hour's drive. Keuka, Niagara, Daemon, Erie CC, Niagara CCC to name a few.
SUNY Geneseo is the pride of the SUNY system. It is a highly selective school with a stellar reputation.

Pretty area. Cheap, whether you live in town or toward Rochester as some faculty do. Reputation for good students. Low pay, though balanced out by cost of living.

Please do. Adjunct work sucks, but there's a lot to be had in the area. There are wide variations in pay and benefits, so I could help you target some of the better institutions for adjuncts. |
