The only thing harder than being a full time academic is being an adjunct.  No respect, health insurance, or job security.  Yuck.

When I was an adjunct I applied for food stamps but was turned down because "I wasn't working enough." As for your friend it will be a meager existence - though if she has a PhD or is close, it will be very important experience.  As I recall, when I was an adjunct I got a university list serv notification about doings on campus.  Whenever I spotted one that looked like food would be involved I swarmed in like a vulture, ate as much as possible, and then left to return to my stack of grading.  Adjuncting is hard hard hard - I really am pulling for your friend.
