I was surprised by that one piece claiming that international hires don't (or shouldn't) count toward "real" diversity! (I don't have the article on me right now, so I hope I'm not mis-characterizing the argument.)

There was a controversy similar to this at Harvard a few years ago. It seems that many of the black students admitted were of Carribean or African ancestry. The argument was that the goal of affirmative action was to correct some of the disadvantages due to the American racial history. By accepting mostly foreign blacks, Harvard's policies were doing little to help the actual African AMERICAN communities that suffered in the past.
