Perhaps as an over-40 academic I'm just a bit out of touch, but what in the world are the "squirrel ears" mentioned in today's Ms. Mentor column? I would love to know.

I suspect they're cat ears too, and I would go so far as to suspect the grad student is an anime fangirl.

I'm sure it's her clever code for flip-flops, or those teeny tiny little short denim jackets, or a nose piercing, or microskirts, or any number of fashion "affronts" that don't meet with her approval.
I will stop myself there.

That's what I assumed. Cat ears strike me as unusual, but not odd (if that makes sense). Though I guess now we'll have to explain what an anime fangirl is.

She says "species changed," not "fashion changed."
I think it's cat ears, for an anime fangirl. We have one in our department. At least one.

Seriously? you mean people actually wear cat ears, not to costume parties, but as fashion? And you've seen it more than once? I must be at a boring school, I've seen nothing like that, except at halloween.

That was my reaction, too. Or, someone who is a "furry." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom

Hmmm, I wonder if that was my little sister? In addition to the ears she often squee's. Many people look at her strangely. She is mostly amused by it, but wonders why people don't take her seriously.

Ears + squee? Your sister is definitely a fangirl of some kind.

I assumed they were Spock ears. (Or Vulcan ears, or whatever the correct Trekkie term is.)

My guess is that the species and the anatomy was changed. As in, digit of the tylopoda.
