Hi Seeking_a_path,
I have a background similar to yours. I finished my PhD about 4 years ago in Instructional Systems Technology. I also took some courses in HCI. All my studies and work experience are in the US, which is where I've live.
I'm cautiously optimistic about finding work in the UK. The Web site I've found to be most useful is "
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/ ". Other Web sites I use are "
http://www.thesjobs.co.uk/rs6/cl.asp?action=browse_start " and "
http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/jobs/education ".
If you are not familiar with the, surprising number of, differences between British English & American English, I recommend you have a look at the Web site at "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_differences#Education ". I made several changes to my CV in order to make it readable to a UK audience.
I've asked a few questions on this discussion board about my job search, and a few folks gave me some very good advice. I recommend reviewing those conversations. One is called "Questions About Upcoming (& 1st) UK Job Interview" and another is called "Modify CV to British Engl?".
I submitted 6 applications before getting my first interview. Overall, I found the interview to be more similar than different that academic interviews I've had in the US with the exception that my UK interview was shorter than US interviews.
So far, the most challenging part is paying for the flight to the UK, if or when you're asked for an interview. I've gotten to the point where I'm planning on paying the cost of the flight. Since I purchase these flights a week or two before leaving, the price is unusually high, about $1,300.
The process is challenging, but it's also exciting, hope this information helps.
