*ahem*
Faking citations, ignoring my Step-Rite Bingeing and purging broadcast from my website Outing my postdoc as someone who swings These are a few of my favorite things
Skipping my classes to cruise for young gay dudes Strip clubs and gun running, snorting crushed quaaludes Stealing department chairs' gold wedding rings These are a few of my favorite things
When the urge strikes When the day's long When I'm feeling caged I simply skip off to my favorite things And leave my TA's Enraged
Ditching a conference to drink with a minor Poison-tipped arrows I'll fire at a shriner Undergrads — they're all just fodder for flings These are a few of my favorite things
Grading by chance, to make students' lives tragic Sorcery, witchcraft, and vampire blood magic Parking on homeless folk, plucking off wings These are a few of my favorite things
This is fantastic!

*!* is contagious, but appropriate hu use can protect you (see http://www.hupronoun.org/). My God. Take your pom poms elsewhere unless you have something substantive to say.

Lingerie from Paris. What verb did you have in mind? Who needs verbs when you have custom undies?!

I have no guilt over any of my pleasures. If you're not enjoying yourself or feel shame over what feels good then you should probably be in therapy. If it grosses somebody else out they don't have to participate. If they find it excessive, then there's really no need for them to indulge.

When I saw the name of this thread, I thought immediately of Papal Indulgences. So, for what sins do you think academics should be able to buy forgiveness-in-advance? Definitely alcohol consumption while grading, yes? And chocolate?

Somebody or other buys them indulgences to wipe out their fines for library books years overdue.

I really enjoy annoying the campus parking terrorists (cops) such as by parking my car illegally and pulling out just before they finish writing the ticket. Oh - no guilt over this one. It feels like justice for getting tickets 5 minutes after the meter runs out.

The Sims 2 University. Imagine - a world where you tell your students to go to class, study, and do homework, and THEY DO IT! And they don't complain! And they are happy with a B! Paradise...

...I read comic books. Not those high-brow "it's an art form!" graphic novels, but comic books! I'm especially fond of the Justice League and of Batman.

But it is only in the high-brow comix where you can find Karadzic getting his due from the forces of Justice.

I love bands that my colleagues have labelled "atrocious." So now I have a photo of the members of Nirvana up in my office. Just to be annoying.
Nirvana, Ramones, Melvins, Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, Hole, Offspring . . .
My thought is this: We of Gen-X are getting the shaft. As the Boomers retire, they are being replaced with newly-minted Gen-Y PhD's. Because they are cheap. No upward mobility for us, since the senior-level positions are being downgraded, and we won't move to another institution without our tenure.
So I'm just going to sit in my office and listen to grunge until I retire.
