That definitely beats Axiology...
Well, certainly the font is worse. But, this isn't just a "Ugly Font" award. Um, santommaso, did you actually look at that cover? I don't think we were dismayed by the font. Really. Look at the image, please. cbl cbl, I am disappointed. Are you suggesting that whatever activity that cover may bring to mind is somehow ugly?

Ok, I looked at the photo again. Maybe the mother-ship duo are looking for the guy with the instrument.

What is formal axiology? My understanding is that if you take the 'popular' philosophy of Robert "Zen and the art of..." Pirsig and try to quantify the aspects mathematically, you get formal axiology. No wonder these naked eunuchs are fleeing with arms raised. - DvF

Arms, but not fingers. At least in the second "naked couple" example. Creepy.

That's a great cover, not an ugly one. Though I am wondering whether it is a :Lifesaver candy and not a lifesaver to save people in the water!

Nice try at self-promotion, Ada. Funny thing is that you kept the "refer" tag on your link to make the 4% profit. Can we get back to the topic at hand?

The PUF ( presses universitaires de France) have a collection where the cover -- the front cover -- is a picture of the scholar himself. Example : if Prof. Fullofhimself writes a book about Montaigne, they put a picture of Prof. Fullofhimself, and not a picture of Montaigne. Who would care about such an insignificant moron as Montaigne, when they can show the geniusly beautiful and sooooo modest face of Prof. Fullofhimself ? It is not always "ugly", but it's always ridiculous, I can assure you Here, a few Amazon links (please note the "I'm so smart" pose) : http://www.amazon.fr/Idées-politiques-XXe-siècle/dp/2130439667/ref=sr_1_3/402-1794976-7465707?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188642159&sr=1-3http://www.amazon.fr/valeurs-léducation-Olivier-Reboul/dp/2130449336/ref=pd_bowtega_3/402-1794976-7465707?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188643227&sr=1-3http://www.amazon.fr/Philosophie-grecque-Jonathan-Barnes/dp/2130482031/ref=sr_1_1/402-1794976-7465707?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188642784&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.fr/Anthologie-littérature-anglaise-François-Laroque/dp/2130435319/ref=sr_1_4/402-1794976-7465707?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188642493&sr=1-4
France doesn't get many Nobel awards. However, the day the swedish royal academy will award Nobel prizes for academic snobbery, megalomania, ridiculous arrogance and shameless autocongratulation, we'll be the champs, no doubt.

We have a similar phenomenon in the US, but it is for real estate agents, who charge you extra money for house advertisements which feature large photographs of the agent, or for lawn signs featuring their visage. I believe it is a relic of the American Wild West, when it was legal to nail your agent to a post in the front yard. - DvF

"Formal axiology" killed the competition as early as the first post, it seems. It's like athletics, when the discus thrower beats the world record at first try.

I have a candidate. The publishers seem to have realized just how horrible the original cover was, since the edition available via Amazon is much better looking. I don't think that first photo really does justice to the ugliness. It's shudder-inducing, trust me. That flesh-toned background with purple lettering, and shapeless red and green graphic just look awful together. The red and green graphic looked like one of those "see the 3-D image" pictures at first glance. I wonder if a picture is hidden in it? Now whenever I hear the phrase "formal axiology", I'll think of the two running eunuchs. Thanks!
