Not for academic travel...but we're heading out of town to Canada in a few weeks and some of hte B&Bs have ensuite or private bathrooms. I am confused. What is ensuite if it's not private?

"En-suite" usually means that the bathroom is connected to the bedroom (that is, you don't have to go out into the hall to access it). But it may be shared between two bedrooms, so that each has a door to it.

It's safest just to call and ask.

The distinction I have always found is that ensuite can be entered directly from the bedroom, private is your own bathroom but may be down the hall. I have certainly come across this in B&Bs in Canada.

I had never heard of shared ensuites before.

OK, cool. The room is cheap--$105--and I just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Just to confirm:

Ensuite = yours alone and connected to the room.
Private = yours alone but you have to leave your room to access it.

Anything else and it's probably communal.

In most cities in Canada, that is not cheap for a B and B! I know of B and Bs in Canada that have ensuite and are around 60 or 70 dollars. And they are real nice!

You can do MUCH better than that for 3-4 star hotels on priceline! I go to canada all the time and pay WAY less than that! even hotwire will give you better deals than that!

True, but it depends on where you are.  Also is there one or two of you in the room and factor in the cost of breakfast.
