I hadn't even thought of that about the mouse, so good point. Has anyone use an Apple mouse?
As for the post above, yes, one of the things that makes the job search even harder is having seen a lot of bad behavior by people who ought to do better, especially with their much touted affiliations, claims to diversity or religiosity or higher values or whatever they claim. Then again, it's probably the case that we should all expect less out of work life, trust less, be more cynical going in, protect ourselves more, and be happily surprised if we wind up with a good situation. I'm lecturing myself here.
Today, I interviewed for a non-university job - followup interview next week - and it seemed no better and no worse a situation. Maybe I'll know more next week. But it did seem as though, if they offered me the job, they'd actually want me to stay as long as I could do the work. Academia seems to have fallen into this mode of adding and cutting people as though they were.......day laborers? waiters? (ah, it's slow tonight, Giovanni, tell your ma we don needya to come in after all)

Best wishes on your interview, alleyoxenfree.
Re: day laborers... you are dead on. I remarked to a colleague once about feeling like we were treated more and more like unskilled laborers - constantly herded, mandated, supervised, subject to "customer evaluations", and afforded less and less professional discretion.
I'm also on the lookout for a way out of academia, like you. Although I may keep my current job of three months if things work out well (they are so far).

Hi Ya'll,
I am new to this site and the job market and am wondering about the chances of getting a position if there is a VP that fits the ad? Any feedback/thoughts would be great. Thanks....

What do you mean by VP? If you mean "Vice President," then you shouldn't apply if you're new to the job market! Visiting Position? Maybe. Explain what you mean a bit more and we may have relevant advice.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

That's so great !! great list. These help us very much. There are some things I usually do such eating right, relaxing or exercise, etc. But sometimes I eat too much and sleep late..
But what about sex? Sometimes I sleep late because of sex. On the other hand, that could be considered both relaxing and exercise, so would that be OK?

Explain what you mean a bit more and we may have relevant advice. I have much the same question. If you mean Visiting Professor (usually VAP - Visiting Assistant Professor), then do a search for "inside candidate," read those (hundreds of) threads, and then apply for the job like you would apply for any other job. If you mean Vice President, then it is entirely possible that the VP is new to the VP job and thus the job is open because the VP just vacated it.

Two interviews down, one to go this week. Two stop-gap jobs and one possible longterm staff position.
Teaching demo that has a mid-year opening, short-term. And exasperating interview this morning with an HR person who STILL cannot decide whether to pass me on to the hiring manager. So that's two hours of my time she's spent dithering over my resume and trying to get me to reassure her that although I have not worked in that exact industry with those exact vendors, I have worked extensively in ABCDXYZ industries and many vendors (and can do the job in my sleep). I don't think I can go any further with this company. I got the impression she is terrified of the higher-ups and sending them a candidate they don't like. And you would laugh if you knew how ironic this procedure is for the industry.
But at least I feel I am out there pitching. I hope it is improving my job karma somehow. I am humble, gods of the universe, and willing to work for food, clothing, and the Xeroxing of my CVs. And on the upside, the HR department of OtherState University was very helpful and kind in inputting my materials when their system went wacky. Win some and hope to win some more.

So then I can report I put in two more retail applications and an application with the city for admin work, did four loads of laundry, took a big old walk, came home and passed out cold on the sofa. If this keeps up, I'm going to need a higher-grade of chocolate (hence the big old walks). Or lower, as the bank account case may be.

Not to get you all down, but...does anybody else feel like they're just facing this huge conveyor belt of app-related work that never stops and never lets you catch up? I just today got to feel happy that the bulk of my teaching position applications are in the mail...and heeeere come the fellowship deadlines! Sweet Jesus, I've been putting forth near-superhuman effort for the last two months, and I can't even keep up with it all, much less get out in front of it!
I went into the whole job-search process telling myself if I was organized and well-prepared, with good people giving me good advice, I'd be ok. And all of that has worked out for me. And I'm still falling behind, exhausted and panicking over all the big stuff I have to get done in the next 24 hours.
/end rant. Thanks, I feel a little better now.

You are not alone. And let's not even go to the subject of how the semester's teaching is going for those of us with a full load.
