Less than one block.
I never see students on my "commute" because the dorms are on the other side of campus.

10 miles -- 20 minutes or so driving. Not far, but lots of lights!
I'm not feeling guilty about this luxury because I spent the last 3 years taking the bus and contributing to the betterment of our environment.
I can't take the bus now, for multiple reasons.
I do see my students from time to time...market, festivals, bars, etc.

about 15 miles. My campus is the eptiome of an "urban" which is nice because there is a definite separation between downtown work and my home. Plus there are three Starbuck's on the way and two gas stations with carwashes attached to them. As you can see, I love to multitask...

I live 7 miles from campus and it takes me approximately 10 minutes to go from home to my office there via automobile, but only 8 minutes of travel time if I hit the green lights. I only have four stoplights to get through and the drive is along a well-maintained 4-lane "rural" highway.
The choice of house had more to do with the spousal unit's needs (he must be within a 15 minute commute of the hospital since he takes call) and we live about 3 miles from the hospital, which means he can get there when needed in about 5 minutes.
My "drive" is usually very pleasant and while we live in a very small town, I only occasionally run into students (most do not live in same town as I do). I love my little town, my little CC where I teach, and the home we have. I do not plan on moving ever again!

I live 22 miles from the campus where I have my full-time position. The commute isn't bad because it's mostly freeway, takes me past exits where I can get off to take care of errands conveniently on the way home, goes through pretty farm country for part of the drive, and goes the opposite direction as the rush hour traffic flow with the sun behind me both morning and evening. The drive takes 30 minutes if there isn't an accident, a rain storm, a blizzard or construction.
I live 7 miles from the urban campus where I have my part-time position. It's a straight shot on a recently repaved major urban street where I can also conveniently stop to take care of errands in either direction. Traffic won't be bad after the construction ends this fall on a freeway that I have to drive over. The drive takes between 10 and 15 minutes depending upon traffic.
On the one day each week during the fall and winter semesters that I have to drive from my part-time job directly to my full-time job, the first part of the drive on city streets is only mildly irritating.

I live about a 15 minute walk from campus. I occasionaly bump into students but I live in a very big city so it is not as though I cannot avoid them.

I'm also about at 15 minute walk from campus, depending on how deep the snow is.
And I don't care at all if I run into students. Which is a good think since I walk right through Frat Row.

About 12 miles and 25 minutes by car, almost an hour if I take mass transit (3 busses!). My partner is at a CC and I am at a Uni, so we checked out both neighborhoods and are living near the CC so we can keep it down to one car. My partner's commute is a 25-minute walk through the neighborhood, then a forest, a footpath over a stream, and onto campus. Jealous? Me, jealous? Why would you think that?! But the area we live in is awesome, great proximity to nature and the lot sizes are better than in the city where my Uni is (though house prices are similar, and horrible). The 'big city' hereabouts--where we go for culture--is just 25 minutes away in the opposite direction to my Uni. We do see students sometimes, and sometimes students from the CC transfer to my Uni, but that's alot of fun, actually!

I commute 55 miles one way, more than what I prefer, but we have a beautiful home in the country and my university is located in a densely populated urban area. I love the country and would never consider moving to the city. I drive 8 miles to the train, take a 1 hr. 15 min. train ride, then a 10 min. subway ride, then walk 10 minutes to my office! Fortunately, I only do this 3 days a week.

Right now, about 1,000 miles or a speedy 17-hour commute. Take your pick.

About a mile from campus, an easy walk. We just moved here and rented a place close to campus for the first year. It's in the upper Midwest and we just don't know how bad driving in the winter is going to be. We might buy a house next year a few towns closer to Big City but, if the winter is awful, we might just keep renting here. We're neither of us fans of driving in snow! SO is from Oregon and literally panics at the sight of the fluffy white stuff - oh boy.

I live 3.5 miles from campus and I regularly bike (~15 min.) or walk (~50 min). With the lack of bike lanes or shoulders on the roads and horrible intersections/scary drivers, the walk is actually more relaxing and safe. I listen to podcasts or music on my iPod as I go back and forth and it gives me some "transition time" between work and home plus good exercise. There aren't many undergrads living in my neighborhood, but I do see them in the grocery stores, restaurants, cafes/bars. I think it's good for them to see we have a life as well and don't disappear in a puff of smoke at the end of lecture :)

About 25 miles, roughly 35 minutes each way. I chose to live in the big city up the road instead of the small city where my university is, for a variety of reasons. I don't regret my choice. I love living in Big City. I occasionally run into students in Big City but not often enough to get annoyed by it. Having lived in the same town as a college where I taught already in my career, I knew I didn't want to do that when I moved to this job.
