I just moved to a new place less than a mile from school. While this is great in terms of the commute, I know once classes start, I won't be able to leave the house without running into a student or two. The grocery store, movie theatre, gas station, even the great hole-in-the-wall bookstore I've come to regard as my summer sanctuary won't be safe.

What were some of the reasons for your choice in distance from campus? The commute? Lower housing prices? Better location? For me, it was all of the above.

Love to hear from others!

For me it was the one house we could find for rent in a quick visit to find housing. Happily it turned out to be a good neighborhood and very convenient.   I heard that there is a student in the neighborhood, but have not met him yet.

I'm not sure about the distance, but it's twenty minutes walking.  We couldn't afford a car when we first got hired here.

I had a long commute for many years and moved close to the school so I didn't have to commute.

Yes, get ready to see your students all over the place.

I really love the ones who work in my favorite watering whole. They know who I go out with and how much we drink.

Not that we drink that much, mind you.

I live a few blocks from campus and less than a mile from my office which is on the far side of campus from where I live.  I love my very pleasant bike ride to work and I love parking my bike in a covered area just a few steps from the door of my building.   I don't really run into that many of my students considering this is a rather small town.  I most often meet them in the frozen yogurt place but I don't go there that often so it is no big deal.

My ride home is even more pleasant because it is a very slight downhill slope and I can almost coast the whole way.  To entertain myself, I sometimes try to see how little pedalling I can do between office and home.  I am easily entertained as you can see! Plus, I get paid $1.50 per day for not driving to campus.  This adds up to about $25 per month, not a big deal but enough to cover a movie or two.  Not to mention the amount I save on gas and wear and tear on the car.

Oooops! Forgot to say how far : about 10 minutes by car. I would have preferred to be within walking distance.

What a great incentive! Tomorrow I'll have to call down to HR and see if they offer anything like that at my institution. After all, they say we're "greening up" our pathetically wasteful campus.

Ah... notaprof, you have my fantasy commute.

I hate commuting.  I have always hated it.  I particularly hate doing it in a car.  I would rather be on a train/bus.  But, sadly, no dice with that here.  So, I drive.

It is called TRIP (Transportation Reduction Incentive Program) if your HR folks are suckers for cute acronyms.  You get the benefits if you carpool, walk, ride a bike or take public transportation. I think this is because of a state mandated policy (California).  Employers with more than a certain number of employees must demonstrate that they do something to encourage alternate forms of getting to work.  This is the way our place decided to handle it.  People can also receive a free monthly bus pass or up to $50 off a metrolink monthly train pass.  Then there is a drawing each month for 4 free movie tickets and each year for some cool prizes including cash.  One year I won a bicycle and another year a $200 gift card!  So I think this is a great program although I would still ride my bike without it so I feel a bit guilty for benefitting so much from something I would do any way.

I live in the next town over, 13 miles from campus. It is about a 20 minute drive, depending on which scenic route I choose. This the perfect commute--far enough from campus to unwind on the drive or plan what the hell I am going to do with my classes that day. Yet close enough to run in on a Saturday to pick up some forgotten paperwork. I still run into students all the time, but I rather like that.

I live 6 miles from campus.  This drive takes 17 minutes.  I rarely see students off-campus I'm guessing because I live in a huge metro area and because I don't hang out where they do.  I'm more likely to see other faculty members when I am out and about.

I live about 5 miles from campus -- about a 15 minute commute -- and I carpool with my hubby and take public transportation when I can. We live here because of the cost & size of the house and yard.

78 miles, one-way. If I get the post-doc, 55 miles one-way. If I get the temporary one-year teaching job, it's longer than the first. I am willing to go to great lengths to get the best next experience to move me up the rung.

In short, too far.

I live about 30km from campus (what's that in miles?).  I catch the train in, takes about an hour door to door.  And I live where I do to be close to the horses and away from the inner city.

Are they your horses? I think 30km is about 23 miles? I have horses, too!

That's a lot for a train ride. It takes me an hour and 35 minutes to drive one-way in good weather. I'm hoping for the lesser of two-weavels.
