I am all of 6 blocks from my campus; 12 blocks from my office. I rarely see students as students mostly take public transit to campus.
It has its good sides, but also its bad sides as the community surrounds the campus and so I never feel I am away from work.

I live 1.3 miles away, according to Google maps. It takes me 25 minutes to walk. Being close enough to walk was a major factor in where we chose to live and we eventually found a great house within a reasonable walk that we could afford.
It's too bad, though, that there's no office waiting for you when you get to campus!

About 2 miles by car, but you could walk it in about 20-30 minutes. We wanted a house where it wouldn't be too big a chore if we had to run back to work in an emergency. This is probably a bigger problem in the sciences than in history.....
Students can't afford to live in the neighborhood. We got lucky and found a fixer upper that is on more than an acre lot. I do run into students at the store, but how can you not, we only have 4 grocery stores in town.

It takes me an hour door to door. I commute via subway to another borough. Everyone I work with lives in the borough where the school is located - so I'm the odd ball.
I have no idea the miles since I don't drive.

22 minutes on foot (30 for normal people). Excellent to have a pleasant walk twice a day. At previous university: 8 min by bike. I don't like commuting! Just far enough to avoid huge concentrations of students. Yet, the area is full of colleagues - bump into them everywhere.

I live about 20 minutes away, in the next town over. (Maybe 12 or 13 miles.) When I was renting I lived within two miles of my school. However, when it came time to buy I couldn't afford anything in Small University Town. Houses are MUCH cheaper in the next town over.
Interestingly, there are more restaurants and shops in my town, but far less activities. I can't seem to find local theatre, music, classes, etc. I wasn't really expecting that, given that my town is larger than Small University Town.

Campus starts about 200 yards from my front door, office is less than a half-mile away. Eight minute walk on the days I don't have meetings / commitments off-campus.

I'm about 11 miles from the CC where I moonlight (and to which I ride bicycle on good days). The U where I am full-time is just up the street from there by about 5 miles. I do not ride bicycle there because the U students will surely run me over. They are scary drivers. Oh gawd, they are scary drivers.
I would prefer to be within more agreeable biking distance, but the house came with the husband, which really, isn't a bad deal at all. Someday, we'll either move closer to my U campus (which we are currently priced out of by a long shot) or we'll move about 10 miles west, within the mountains. If it weren't for the pricing, we probably would think that moving into the mountains is stupid, but we're very, very good at convincing ourselves that we want what we can afford.

2.7 miles, and the way to avoid students is to drive away from, rather than toward, campus to do the grocery shopping etc. Having an irregular schedule and being out mostly in mornings helps avoid students, too. I bought here because I got a great house for not much money in a beautiful little quiet neighborhood on a tree-shaded dead-end street (hope that is not a metaphor). Drawback is that there is no good bike path and no safe road biking to work. But going in only 2 days (in a tiny car) means not burning too many fossil fuels, so that's ok..

800 yards to my office, and 1600 yards from the ocean, and 1900 yards from where my sailboat is moored. Ahhh.
<shame-facedly> I still drive to all three.
Best wishes EA
Hey engineer_adrift...I think that we must live in the same house, work at the same campus, and own the same boat!!!

47.5 miles one way. My husband is a potter, with a huge kiln (think flames shooting three feet up from a 8 foot square box), so that kinda freaks out the neighbors. Living in any suburban or urban neighborhood with a gas kiln isn't gonna cut it. My CC is in a very urban area; my home is in a very beautiful rural area. Somehow the hour communte doesn't seem so bad when I end up lounging on the deck with a nice Pinot Noir staring out at the thirty mile view. My beautiful husband bought me a nice jazzy little <red!> sports car to make the commute bearable, too. Now if he could only abolish the carbon footprint guilt I feel. <sigh>.

I am jealous. I work at a commuter campus of a R1 and live in the R1 city, commute to the branch campus. Live near main campus for library, cultural / social opportunities. HATE driving that much. Listening to language tapes to make the most of the time!

5 minutes walking. Too close.
Previous job was 1hr 15 min commute each way. Too far.
Hoping to get the next one just right.
