Banter

Banality

Inanity

Well, as one of the resident experts in inanity, I would say that inanity is rarely ironic.  It is dead serious--and it is precisely this lack of irony that differentiates true Surrealism from, say, Absurdism.

Irony traffics in banality by foregrounding the very banality of the banality.  (The "banality.")  Inanity tries to take banality on its own terms and extend its frontiers.

Banter is a rhetorical, rather than a conceptual, form, a sort of verbal tennis.  Both inanity and banality can be conveyed through banter.  We often banter on the fora, whether we are being serious or not.

Humor is an act of perception, rather than a rhetorical category or device.  Some people find irony very funny.  Some people find Surrealism funny.  Some people find Beckett funny.  Some people find Chaplin funny, or Richard Pryor.  Some people do not.  I would argue that neither inanity (at its most serious), banality, or irony are necessarily trying to be funny--not counting explicitly comedic forms (Monty Python etc.).

Yes.  Thank you that was very interesting. But I don't but your distinctions.  Generally I buy free trade coffee.
