Given recent misunderstandings, I'm posting a thread to allow people to tell stories about making ironic comments that were missed or about misunderstanding other peoples' ironic comments.

To start us off---

I was out buying a car, and the salesman told me about their low, low downpayments of several thousand dollars to which I responded, "so low?" He kept talking.

I saw Umbrellas of Cherbourg with a friend, and I swore that the movie was too earnest to be straight up. But, sure enough, Umbrellas was not an ironic movie. My bad.

You are confusing proper irony with other things such as sarcasm. Nothing that you have mentioned thus far is actually ironic. Perhaps this is part of your problem.

Yes, I have had older students who seemed to have a chip on their shoulder. Why do you ask?

Turning a conversation about an issue into one about personality of an individual misses the point of the thread.

Not at all, because the personality you project is the actual issue. Based on your comments on the "older students and classroom" thread, I am not convinced that you are able to effectively and accurately interpret the tone and intentions of others. In other words, I think the problem is yours, and I suspect it extends to your real-world interactions as well as your virtual ones. You deny that this is the case, since you say your students and colleagues are able to understand when you are being "ironic", but I remain fairly certain that the vast majority of your professors are not relying on you to stroke their sensitive egos.

You're very combative. I generally find people who are hostile without any reason are projecting their own problems. I asked a serious question. I suggest you stop starting wars and either answer or take off.

This reminds me of Alanis Morrisette's song "Ironic".  Most of the so called ironic incidents she referred to were simply unfortunate and not at all ironic.

What is ironic is that eyetoeye claims to know everything, yet doesn't know the difference between sarcasm and irony.

Random House Thesauras lists sarcasm as a synonym for irony. According to Random House the difference isn't worth mentioning. At any rate, if you need to be a soldier rather than an academic go to Iraq rather than to this thread.

This is so uncalled for and out of context it takes my breath away. Any benefit of the doubt I had is gone. I don't know who it is that you see "eyetoeye" with, but I'll be they don't know anyone in Iraq.

If you disagree then just don't post on this thread. You are starting a war for no good reason. It is not part of civil discourse.

And of posting in an academic forum. If you are unable to take the heat, stay out of the kitchen, and for godssakes, don't light the furnace (mixed metaphor, not meant as irony).

ha! You reported *larryc* to the mods? Oh my god. I'm laughing so hard I can't type......

It's like you people don't even understand sports. Playing tennis requires people use a tennis ball and a tennis racket. If one person brings a tennis racket and tennis ball and the other person brings grenades the match doesn't turn out very well. The person who cannot stand to lose the tennis match and brings grenades so as to "win" is the person who cannot stand the pressure. It's about playing within the rules under pressure, not breaking the rules when the going gets tough.

Do you mean to infer that your playing with those of greater command of irony: slinging tennis balls against grenades?

I think I like that.
