So, what kinds of posts and real life remarks bug you? And what do you do about it? Do you take offense, and do you let the offender know?

I'll take a stab at this one...how about people who seem to get offended at everything?  And their collary, those who feel the need to qualify every statement.  You know the ones:  "I'm not a racist, but..." and "Not that there's anything wrong with that..."

I agree with gesualdo.  A post can be offensive, for any number of reasons - hateful, stupid, racist, sexist, et al - but to take offense at an anonymous post on a web board is a self-choice, and not an emotionally healthy one.  - DvF

Posts that pull a topic away from a blossoming intellectual discussion into an exchange of "inside" jokes between two or three people who watch the same TV show.

In general, generalizations...that said, I have to consider myself now guilty of such generalizations. Bah.

I was thinking last night about how this thread didn't develop. I started it because someone posted a one-liner on the LHC thread and several people took offense. First it was ignored, and then discussion of it was interspersed with the on-topic posts for a day or so, and now that discussion is finished. What I was thinking last night is that the non-starter nature of this thread illustrates the difference between "real life/real time" issues and problems that people (like students) really care about, and the abstraction of same in case studies that instructors bring to class, for example.

Anyway, the types of posts that bug me are the ones that demonstrate the serious belief that a single way of looking at the world is the only possible "right" way to look at it, and a single interpretation of another's post is the only possible right interpretation. Therefore, if someone disagrees with the writer, that person must be stupid or deluded or not in possession of the important facts, or racist/sexist/homophobic, or a nazi or commie, and that if the writer proceeds to browbeat them thoroughly enough, the other person will of course be persuaded. I stay away from lots of the highly charged discussion topics because they seem to devolve into the kind of exchange that bugs me.

I don't take offense, though, even at things that come across to me as racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise prejudiced. I just take note, incorporate it into what else I know of the writer, and use it as more information to determine the credibility I assign to the writer's words. There are some posters who are prolific enough that I've formed a good opinion about their nature, and they can make a bad joke that doesn't come off the way they expected, and it doesn't change my opinion of their essential goodness.

I'd rather read "offensive" things and interpret them for myself than have the moderators on guard all the time to get rid of "offensive" posts.

The discussion of this incident continues in PMs, largely, I think, because the LHC thread is a safe and friendly space, and nobody wants to really rock the boat too hard.

But the continued private discussions have touched on issues like unconscious racism/sexism in the individual, inherent racism/sexism within society and our relative ability/inability to even be aware of it, and the importance of taking responsibility for one's actions in the resolution of conflict.

I think one of the reasons this thread didn't take off is because it's so abstract.

Try actually offending people, though, and watch the thread grow!

Would you take offence if those comments were actually directed at you? If racist comments included something offensive about your heritage? What about if you were a woman, and someone wrote something disparaging about women? Or if you were gay, and someone wrote a joke, say, about AIDS in the gay community?

It's easy to say that you wouldn't take offence when no one's actually offending you personally.
