Yeah, not looking for a job. Thanks for the kind thought though.
Kind thought?? But more seriously, you began this thread by referencing (1) Abu's deplorable reappearance in Congress, (2) the "war" on "terror"/Iraq, and (3) the state of this nation's health support (non)system. Please write a substantive post relating to any one of those three issues, and I promise, I'll certainly participate. I imagine others will as well. It's what you make it.

List of sh!t I did to contribute to the world today:
rode my bike to school instead of driving my car (this is a daily thing)
gave my students my end-of-the-semester lecture about reigniting humanism
Got paperwork together for new 501c3 - a central org for home state's arts community
worked on my diss so that I can get the PhD pay raise ;) and thus support the child currently residing in my wife's uterus and not depend on the state to pay my bills
Ate a bag of sunflower seeds rather than smoke cigarettes (damn it!)
wrote letters to the editor bemoaning the absence of bike paths in my town (arguing that this links directly to obesity) and calling out the city council for their disenfranchisement of people of color in my town
helped a former student with a job search
wrote a letter of recommendation for a colleague
... are you getting the point yet? Most people on this forum do a great deal to contribute to the improvement of this world. Just because we aren't hashing out the world's problems in this forum does not mean that we aren't as passionate as you portray yourself to be. What are you doing aside from b*tching about other people not doing enough. Why not take that energy and put it into some kind of grassroots effort to combat whatever injustices or problems you see the world? You would be a much more effective member of society ...

Alabama or England? On the OP,hu must be a poli sci student or prof. They get their jollies off by instigating arguments. They think debate is the only way you solve problems. There is more to life than just words. Hey, I could make that my saying!

Well said. I would like to hear about starting a 501(c)3 arts org. Want to do the same, as I might be leaving my typical fiscal agent, my academic institution, in the near future.

There are intellectual threads on the fora. Just not in the Meet-n-Greet section.
You know, I was thinking about this the other day. I was talking to a friend about what I watch on tv, and to be honest, it's pretty damn embarassing.
Then I realized that all the people I know who poo-poo boob-tube television are those pseudo-intellectual types. You know the ones: they work mind-numbingly boring jobs during the day, and "smart tv" and documentaries are the only intellectual stimulation they really get.
I, on the other hand, have spent the morning reading freaking Derrida for my stoopid comps. And then, on the coffee date I set up as a break, I end up talking about what I've read with my friends, who are also grad students. In the afternoon, I'll be working on a paper or an article or something. My day is filled with intellectual activity.
After that kind of day, I like a good CSI rerun. And maybe a bit of the Lonely Hearts Club thread.
You know what I'm saying?
Interesting dichotomy: real intellectuals, completely self absorbed, till time for CSI; or, psudeo-intellectuals, pretenders and posers peeking out from their Bartleby lives in the hope of light and what...? Oh, to reclaim the simplicity of studying Derrida and decamping to a coffee house to discuss theory with equally intense friends. The entire package, certainly not Derrida himself, is simplicity incarnate. Even the poverty is inconsequent, part of the wonderful freedom that includes the windings of the mind with the only occasional impingement of exigencies making it all the more luscious. Been there, done that, recognize that there is more to life. I hope and trust you will continue to grow. Oh, and I prefer Shark to CSI.

Hey, it's only about an hour and a half then! Depends on how desperately you need Shipley's!
Okay, how about we plan something for this fall? In B'ham? Seems kind of central!
Oh, case! Wanna meet in B'ham?

Quit the cultural references! What is "Shark"? Greg Norman? Spielberg's offspring? A poker player?

Good on you! I'm quitting, too. How far along are you? Interesting dichotomy: real intellectuals, completely self absorbed, till time for CSI; or, psudeo-intellectuals, pretenders and posers peeking out from their Bartleby lives in the hope of light and what...?

The Derrida reference really ticked you off, huh? Well, complain to my department, not me.

Wait! Meeting! Whoa! My Sis-in-law is in B'ham. What's going on? Are we meeting? Southerners unite! Exactly! It has been bouncing around for a week or so, nothing definite, but those of us in the Southern states need a get together! Wanna plan one? I'll start a thread! By the way, helpful, Shark is a lawyer tv show.
