It may be that in our urbanized culture we are just beginning to publicly recognize what was long known: wrenching life from the body is a nasty and often lengthy business.
Perhaps the most savage, direct assault is paradoxically the most humane and merciful. Consider two, admittedly highly charged, examples: beheading with a sword and lethal injection. Hopefully we cringe at both. But too commonly we ascribe a unique barbarism to the first, and accept the second as at least a benighted attempt at a humane execution. In doing so we are really only reflecting on our own response, not the experience of the victim who, most assuredly, is less inconvenienced by the barbarism of a single quick stroke. Given a choice between "pop my head" in one swift stroke or spend 15 minutes looking for my vein to assuage your conscience, pop my head and get it over.
I am not a vegetarian, but I can't disassociate this discussion of cow bolts from McCarthy's No Country for Old Men
I take your point goldstein--you'll get no argument from me about the sanctity of life and I personally do not support the death penalty. I was thinking specifically about the treatment and suffering of domesticated farm animals in my post. And the problem with the 'swift stroke' method as you put it, (as Schlosser found in his chapter on the meat packing industry) is that it often went wrong--they weren't properly stunned--and the creatures suffered needlessly. Now come on, goldstein, would you really rather be bludgeoned to death? Or go for the injection (2-step method: first sleep, then lethal shot). I would consider a firing squad but certainly pass on the electric chair.... TH

However, so far The Fiona has not managed to get anyone to post on the Meat Eating and Such thread.
Free donuts to the first posters on that thread!

BTW, regarding the atty gen's perjury, I thought the bipartisan smackdown he received quite entertaining. <contented sigh>
Yes, a smack down no doubt. But one very similar to smacking down a recalcitrant student who continues to, despite all obvious evidence to the contrary, say "prove it." All the time knowing full well that grand dad is a major benefactor and dad is on the board. And so he is dressed down by the dean, and gladly walks with his C-. Frankly, and perhaps to your astonishment, I can accept and connive in, that outcome for an undergraduate plagiarist (IF NEED BE, and it sometimes is). But much less so when the stakes are so much gravely higher. At stake in this particular case is an object lesson in the fundamental constitutional prerogatives of the branches of our government. Gonzales is not simply saying that he can't be cornered, he is demonstrating an underlying philosophy that the Congress does not deserve his careful consideration. Framed this way, his various testimonies are breathtaking in their implication.

Now come on, goldstein, would you really rather be bludgeoned to death? Or go for the injection (2-step method: first sleep, then lethal shot). I would consider a firing squad but certainly pass on the electric chair.... TH
I am struck by the frequency with which people misread perfectly obvious statements here. I said beheaded with a single blow of the sword, and it becomes "bludgeoned to death" in response. No, you are right I don't want to be bludgeoned to death. But, again, I never set that up as one of the alternatives. I also alluded to, but did not make explicit, the recent multiple problems with even the simple process of "finding a vein" which you have translated to a [seemingly simple] two step process. Were that so, my entire point would have been undercut and I would not have offered it. I think it is important in a forum of this type to write is very clear and short sentences. Your response indicates that even that may not be enough.

Sorry, Fiona. I had stopped, but when people ask questions, I generally can't resist replying.
Well, unless they ask totally useless questions that have no correct answer no matter what you say, as far as the asker is concerned.
