Good for him! I am so tired of all of these troubled, spoiled, rich girl stories in mainline news. I don't recall Huntley, Brinkley and Cronkite being forced to report on such drivel. People used to read gossip magazines (remember Rona Barrett) if they wanted celebrity news.

OK, I'm completely lost on this one. Who is(are) Cafferty (Lohan); what's not being reported and why is this good? Also, what's happening in the video link (other than some guy not getting technical details sorted out before broadcast).
Sorry.

J_P,
Cafferty is the news reporter who refused to read the Lindsay Lohan story (latest DUI arrest) off his teleprompter. He wasn't having technical difficulties; he was refusing the story.

If you really don't know who Lohan is - watch The Parent Trap (the remake, not the original), before proceeding.

I not usually a Cafferty fan (I suppose he could be a little more self-righteous, I'm just not sure how), but I commend him for refusing to read the latest trash. Can't we leave this crap for the entertainment tonight type shows???? After all, it's not like there's anything else important happening in the world. Is this an inevitable outcome of competing 24 hour cable news channels?

Similar to Cafferty, Anderson Cooper at CNN refused even to say Paris Hilton's name, and pointed this out publicly in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. That is, until the story in which Paris left jail early. At that point, he apparently relented.

What I'd really love is for these reporters to replace the story they are supposed to read with something about some woman who has it together and is doing real, good work. Do a different woman every time. That would really hammer in how ridiculous this all is. I want to be famous for... going to work every day! It's at least as newsworthy as Paris goes out to a party.

Or for that matter, report on someone entirely unfamous who is charged with DUI. Those unfamous folk deserve their time in the sun too.

For some reason I get some kind of sick pleasure watching these idiotic celebs self-destruct.
I'll venture that many other Americans feel the same, which is why it gets reported as news. Many people in contemporary society are vindictive, but they don't always get to express such emotions. Most of the other news these days consist of the same old depressing story: endless war, slumping economy, and so on. The "news" stories about celebrities give people a brief respite from hearing all the bad news and provide them with a way to release their repressed vindictiveness. In a sense, these idiotic young women are Straw Girls; they are such easy targets to take down. And don't forget, that this "news" sells.

Plus, when your kids say "who's she?" you get a great chance to talk about:
1. growing up too fast 2. having too much money 3. why kids really do need parents and other people who can say "no" to them 4. why drugs and alcohol are bad 5. why being too skinny is unhealthy
etc. etc. etc.
As a parent, I find value in these cautionary tales. I do. My daughter is too young, but my son, at 10, is the perfect age. It was amazing to watch him go from "wow, she's pretty" to "oh, how sad".
Now, whether these stories belong on real news shows is another question. Good for that anchor for drawing the line.

So is everyone just as angry at how much space and time have been lost covering the release of the iPhone or latest Harry Potter stuff?
Or is that "OK" fluff?

These at least have some marginal relevance to people. Arguably, the iPhone creates economic competition that could shake up how other cell phone companies offer services. Since a lot of folk, young and old, obsessively read Harry Potter, the series arguably plays a role in the transmission of culture, education of youths, dumbing down of adults, etc. Paris Hilton does none of this (except maybe dumbing down of adults). Lindsay Lohan only does any of this when she's in a movie.

I dunno. It looks a bit like:
"Harmless, lighthearted lifestyle/entertainment news" = pop culture stuff I like or am interested in.
"Trash or fluff beneath my attention" = pop culture stuff I don't like or am not interested in.

I have fallen deeply in love with George Clooney, Don Cheadle, and Steven Speilberg and I can't hear enough about them right now. George Clooney and Don Cheadle are speaking with Annan about Darfur. Steven Speilberg is pressuring China to put sanctions on Sudan. This is the celebrity news I want to hear. More! MORE!
