I read 500 pages of the LHC thread at once (..wait, what? did you say tough?...oh, I thought you meant stupid....)
I can do a dozen proper one-hand push-ups.

I am thin and amazingly clumsy, I have never played any sport. I was a very serious hiker/climber at one point and did a through-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 1980 and almost got to the top of Mount Aconcagua in 1986. Now I am just another middle-aged guy with a mortgage and no time to excercise.
Larry, don't you know you were the inspiration for this thread? You've eaten a spider! In my mind, you look just like Steve McQueen. By the way, where's still_Dave? ( still_Dave? Are you out there? Hello?) Didn't he once say he spent a night or two (or a week) in a prison overseas? That gets 2 'toughness' gold stars.

When I am not fed, I turn into a big cranky baby. I hate to be wet or cold and I let everyone know it.
But, I once spent a day in the army reserve with my boots full of blood (broken blisters; new boots) and did not complain. After the training day was over and I went to see the medic, he was shocked: "why didn't you just tell someone and go home?" I did not know this was an option--it certainly would not have been for the active-duty folks. The army reserve is different now; they take their training much more seriously.
I once rode my bike 77 miles on no more sustenance than 6 small boxes of raisins.
I let an ovarian cyst grow to 10 lbs, and when they did the surgery, they discovered rampant endometriosis, several fibroids, and an inflamed appendix. They refused to believe I had not been in much pain.
Wait...all my "tough" stories seem to come from my own stupidity and mule-like obstinacy. Hm....

I had surgery yesterday, and I haven't taken any pain meds for almost 8 hours.
I'd feel even tougher if I hadn't bawled like a baby when they gave me the IV.

Take the pain meds, MarieS!!
If they prescribe them to you, just take them. You will heal faster and your body will be under less stress. I'm just sayin'...I was hospitalized for 3 days after my surgery, and over the second night I wanted to see how long I could go without asking for more pain pills (for the first 24hours post-surgery, I had been on an epidural full of things ending in -caine and -phine...wonderful stuff).
The nurse came in to check on me and found that my body temp was up for no apparent reason. I told her I was trying to not take pain meds. She glared at me and then lectured me and then handed me the percosets.
Just take them. You'll feel better.

I used the toilets at the Cape Town bus station, and yet I live.
I taught middle school emotionally handicapped kids, and yet I live.
I gave my cat a pill once, and yet I live.
That last one almost got me though. Never again.

I used to be able to run 5 miles pretty easily but now I'm done to about 2 miles. I competed nationally in a sport and awas on the varsity team through high school and part of college, until I got tired of it.
I knew a guy who could write papers in 2-3 hours at 3am, however, and I really wished I had that toughness.

Wow. I'm sure they were stellar papers. With lots of thought involved. My hero. I can see why you would get tired of running.

One guy worked for the NYTimes and is now editor at a major magazine. Another guy is a professor at an Ivy. Apparently they had a decent level of thought. One guy is a partner at a major law firm and brings home more in a year than I probably will in a decade. I didn't get tired of running. That wasn't my sport. Nor was tennis my sport.
