Inspired by LarryC's tale of eating a spider, I start this thread for tales of toughness, however you wish to define it. Physical, mental, emotional, etc.

I'll start:
-I can curl about 25 lbs., each arm
-once (just once) ran 11 miles
-can out-kayak husband
-took 3rd place in a shotput competition in high school (okay, so that was 20 years ago, maybe it doesn't count)

And... that's all I can think of. Apparently, I am not very tough.

Others? Any skydivers? 20+ hours of childbirth/labor? Firewalkers? Super-marathoners? Come one, come all, tell me your tales.

I am just going to come right out and say it: I am NOT tough in any way, shape or form, but I do stick myself in the stomach with a rather long needle (about 6 centimeters) every three days to place my insulin pump's infusion set in a "new" spot. However, I even get a little queasy with that!

There, the bar is definitely lowered! :)

This is a fun thread idea; I'm curious to read what others will post. It feels sort of weird to post, like I'm bragging or something. But it's also kind of interesting to reflect on some of my experiences, and this is an anonymous forum after all!

When I was a kid, I had to get a wart dug/burned out of the bottom of my foot. Then I had to walk a mile home. I was alone for the doctor's visit and the walk home.

I basically raised myself from the time I was 10 years old.

My labor with my first child was 24 hours. No pain medication. Hu was over 9 pounds and 'face-up,' so I had back labor (the pain doesn't really let up between contractions). I was alone with my SO for most of the active labor (my midwife was in the next room, attending to another patient who needed her more than I did). I pushed for almost two hours, then fainted once it was over, from the sheer physical demand. I had bloodshot eyes and a burst blood vessel in my lip from the force of my pushing. After this experience, I really did feel like I could do anything, that nothing was beyond my ability if I were determined enough.

In terms of physical toughness: one of my jobs prior to going to grad school was unloading freight. I worked the night shift; we would unload and unpack boxes of goods until the semi-truck was empty (typically 11-12 hour shifts). It's hard to describe how exhausting this job was.

It's probably pretty odd to take pride in these accomplishments, but I do.

I exercise 70 minutes or so a day, killing 800 calories on three different cardio machines.

I used to be a strength trainer, but I blew a disc in my neck, and the neurosurgeon told me to lay off, unless I wanted to blow another one.

I put up with my sister.

I've had cavities filled without novacaine.  I've had D & Cs without anesthesia.  I'm tough enough!

My wife and I adopted from Ethiopia.  That's 30 hrs on a plane or in an airport, sleepless, with a 3 month old that didn't know us.  Then we had to go through immigration and TSA screening in Chicago.

I am a complete weakling when it comes to other people's pain, emotional or physical. It physically hurts me to watch or hear about, sometimes. It's a very weird phenomenon.

So far I seem to have a pretty high tolerance for my own pain, though, both physically and otherwise. Haven't been through the things that have just been posted, so there's still time to prove this wrong....

I've played 1/2 of soccer game on a sprained ankle (taped, no drugs).

I once ran a 5K while battling pneumonia - and placed 4th in a pack of 50 runners.

Wow, mirandaf, I thought you were sending me to some obscure dental video -- imagine my surprise when I was transported back to high school!

Yeah, I had a few cavities that the dentist said should need novacaine.  He filled a couple and all went well.  He was drilling for the last one, and the pain became intense.  I clenched my toes and gripped the chair arms tightly.  I said that I may need some novacaine, but he said he was almost done.  I beared it.  After the filling, he told me that, "Gee, that was almost a root canal."

I can calf-raise more than 865 pounds. I dont know how much more because we ran out of space to keep racking the plates.
