state-to-state car insurance distaster

I'm moving out of massachussets after living there for 9 months. I'm temporarily living in New Hampshire for 20 days before moving completely to North Carolina. Didn't realize that since Mass insurance only operates within massachusetts, and I (being stupid) accidently informed them of our temporary operating address, they're now threating to cut our insurance off.
This means that I have to reregister for 20 days in New Hampshire, and then register again in North Carolina. My wife is about to kill me! Any shortcuts on how to get out of this mess... I was trying to do the responsible thing and notify everyone!

Get insurance in North Carolina. Tell them you just moved and haven't gotten your plates yet. This, of course, provided you have an NC address. Usually this will work.

I've never lived in New Hampshire, but with the 30-days most states give to return plates, couldn't one just find a new insurance provider in New Hampshire (while still with MA plates) and then change the address to NC (with NC plates)? I've been with the same insurer (GEICO) since age 19 and it's only been a phone call each time (3) I have moved to another state, with small alterations in the insurance premium.

In NC, you must have an insurance policy before you can get your title and tags, so you could just go ahead and register insurance in NC, even with a PO box if necessary.

Or use your office address in NC if you don't have a place yet. Just tell them you are living there, you are on vacation in NH.
