Yet Maine got ranked way ahead of Alabama in terms of places to raise children.  (Sorry, I've got no links for backup).

I don't beleive I said Maine was Alabama, only one step removed.

Alabama has Huntsville and Space Camp.  Maine has lobster.

Let's get summer over with! Me want snow!

Maine has snow. Alabama pretends to.

When the New Madrid fault goes, believe me, I'll know it. And I'm not real happy about it. But California has them fairly regularly, big and small. I don't want reminders.

Maine has lobster, gorgeous coastline, great little villages to visit, awesome seafood to eat (ok, goes with lobster), fabulous weather (unless you hate snow) and LL Bean and the whole outlet scene in Freeport.

I haven't been to Huntsville.  What's cool there? (I'm not snarking, I'm seriously curious).

I have been to NY and couldn't imagine living in a place with so many people. My father was raised in Jersey, but while I think I wouldn't have minded living there at the time he grew up, you wouldn't catch me there now. My mother is from the LA area, and even experienced an earthquake. I've never been there but my opinion is formed on what she's seen on visits back, the number of people, and the fact that the ground moves a little too much. I live not too far from a fault line but it doesn't move very much and we never feel it.

Of course, when it does have the big one, we're ALL going to feel it...

What is with you people who think all of New York state is New York City? Get a grip.

Well, ahem, part of it seems to be your misreading of posts.  I went back through and only gennimom has said NY = NYC.

Now, I said I could not live in NYC:

I can't "do" enormous cities.  NYC would kill me.  I need space and the outdoors and the ability to walk outside and hear nature noises, not cars honking.

Your response indicated that you thought I said New York, not NYC:

Lol. There's a whole place called New York state.

Upstate New York has simply gorgeous scenery, and so many great outdoors activities:  camping, hiking, boating, canoeing, birding, etc.

This thread is about states where you couldn't live. Not cities. So state is a given.

Pry, dinging someone for being off-topic?  Hee hee!  (I've been off topic myself, but the reigning queen ... nay, empress, of CHE Forums didn't get her unofficial 6th star by always being on topic!)

If you'd like, you could have indeed dinged me for being off topic, but to say I talking about all of NY when I specifically said NYC does seem like a misreading of my post to me.

Isn't that one supposed to pop off really soon?  I think I recall that they have quakes every 100 years or so and the last one was sometime in the late 1800s.  Say bye-bye Memphis while we watch the Mississippi run backwards again.

I tried to edit my post but the time limit passed.  Damn, these CHE Forums, they tempt you with the option to "modify" even when you can't!

Yes, I realize I may have given you The Fiona's title ... I just can't keep up with the royalty  these days.  I was out of town for a week and now I've hopelessly forgotten everything.

Ah, well, back to manuscript editing for me....

And what else is in NYS beside the city? Please. New York State has the best hiking, biking, outdoors activities as any other state. And cows. I guess you think NY is one big city? I never hear cars honking, only birds chirping.

Because the rest of NY is really Maine, which is only one step removed from Alabama.

Upstate? That's everything above Yonkers, right?

Where's the lobster? I must be fishing in the wrong areas of the state for that.

Hmmm, I think you have to get above Poughkeepsie/Kingston and such. Lots of people there, too. Further north and west. Chenango county has more cows than people. A stones throw from here. I think I drove through it earlier today. Can you say podunk?

Maybe it'll suck New Orleans back up above sea level.

On Maine, I love it.  Thinking about buying a cabin there.  But Maine has higher child poverty than adult poverty, a higher-than-average number of people living "near poverty" (between 100-150% of poverty level) than the rest of the nation,  a stagnant economy and  a brain-drain problem.  The kids keep leaving.  And that is the best indication of why not to move somewhere -- if the young people see no opportunity . . .

Still, it is better than West Virginia.
