I'm amazed at how many of you dislike my homestate.  How can Alabama be compared with North Dakota? The mind boggles.

I wonder how much of these results are driven mostly by assumptions about weather or assumptions based on stereotypes?

Assumptions based on stereotypes, I'm sure. I like Alabama a lot; although, I'm not that wild about Birmingham.

Assumptions based on stereotypes, I'm sure. I like Alabama a lot; although, I'm not that wild about Birmingham.

That's my hometown. I've lived in six different Alabama cities and once in the hinterlands of a rural county.  I've also lived in six US states and a couple of other countries, so my views aren't just from living in Alabama.

Personally, I don't want to live in B'ham again. I left it to go to college and never really moved back permanently, despite having all my family there.  I prefer my current city, which is smaller than B'ham but more cosmopolitan/international/future-oriented and some other things I just like better.

I did not include, on my list of 3 states in which I would not want to live, any states I have never visited.  I don't think I made those choices based on stereotypes but on my assessment of cost of living and weather and population density issues (too high is bad, too low is bad, in my scheme of things).

Pry, I also think lots of folks have probably made their choices  based on stereotypes... but I could be wrong.

I find it interesting that most folks are saying that they can't live in some place because of the weather.

I used to live in Looz-e-anna... I didn't put it on my list although I would kill myself if I had to move back there.

I put La on my list too, because I lived in three different towns/cities there...once with a serial killer running around getting women who were demographically like me.  That was actually scarier than the hurricane threats.

Mississippi depresses me and the next was Alaska because I'm not sure it's got enough classical music going on to keep me occupied, although it's gorgeous and other things could keep me occupied.

I have been to NY and couldn't imagine living in a place with so many people. My father was raised in Jersey, but while I think I wouldn't have minded living there at the time he grew up, you wouldn't catch me there now. My mother is from the LA area, and even experienced an earthquake. I've never been there but my opinion is formed on what she's seen on visits back, the number of people, and the fact that the ground moves a little too much. I live not too far from a fault line but it doesn't move very much and we never feel it.

Of course, when it does have the big one, we're ALL going to feel it...

I know NY and NYCity are two different things. The state is too close to the city for me! ;) Besides, while I like and want snow this winter, I don't think I can handle the volume Oswego got!

Because the rest of NY is really Maine, which is only one step removed from Alabama.

Upstate? That's everything above Yonkers, right?

I'd say north of Scarsdale.

Yet Maine got ranked way ahead of Alabama in terms of places to raise children.  (Sorry, I've got no links for backup).

You willing to settle on P&J's in Port Chester as a demarcation point?  I don'tknow for sure if you can get good tripe in upstate, and they have good tripe . . .  this is a little above Scarsdale, and Yonkers.

I don't beleive I said Maine was Alabama, only one step removed.

Your logic may be a little faulty.  When a fault line doesn't move much, yet it is in an area that is very tectonically active, you're setting yourself up for trouble.  It isn't moving because it is "hung up", but when the pressure builds, it will snap severely.  I think it would be preferable to be in a place that has recently experienced a large quake or one that has lots of smaller quakes than to be in a place where a Big One is expected, but you haven't felt anything...

For those reasons, and all the  people and insanity, I would not live in LA or SF areas, but I didn't put Cali on my list because there are some decent spots.

I don't believe I did either...I just said Maine got ranked "way ahead" of Alabama...lots of steps removed.  Ya know, just sayin'.
