I would have to say that the spiders are my biggest reason for not wanting to live in OK or TX. I have been in both these states (not extensively, though) and they are very pretty in their own way - I think Dallas is a beautiful city as far as cities go.
See, I am already feeling bad for naming states I wouldn't want to live in.... :) I'm sure all places have to have at least one redeeming quality!

Someone in Manitoba just got bitten by a black widow spider that came in grapes he bought at the store. Ugh!

Yes, we are exporting them to Canada now.

Oklahoma and Texas - too brown and have you seen the size of the spiders there???????
Alaska would be fabulous during the summer months only. I don't think I could stand a long, dark winter.
Too brown? Obviously, you have yet to experience Houston in all its glory. It rains...and rains...and rains....100% humidity on most days. Grass has been known to grow ten inches behind you as you mow. Spiders? Must have missed those during my 25 years in Houston. Never saw one bigger than a DaddyLonglegs. However, there are palmetto bugs. Giant cockroaches that fly and hiss at you, and are often bigger than a hummingbird. Cats love them...they are crunchy. Dallas? Grew up near there, and it varies between dry and brown, and wet and green; can't say I ever saw any large spiders either. And East Texas is quite green perpetually with all its lovely pine trees. Central and West Texas are the "brown" areas. Haven't been to far South Texas, so can't speak for that (or the size of their spiders). Now, Oklahoma, that's an entirely different matter! HW

I killed a lovely black spider on the stairs today. It was only about the size of a nickel. I found it because the cats were playing with it.

I have only been in Central and West Texas and have been through most of Oklahoma. When I was visiting friends in Dallas, I had the most incredibly HUGE spider in my shoe when I tried to put it on the next morning. Maybe my friends just badly needed an exterminator, but that experience has stayed with me for a LONG time... lol. I checked my shoes regularly for years.

I'm a serious arachnophobe, or at least I used to be, so I do understand the immediate adrenaline rush, the fear, and the recoiling.
Still...that big spider in your shoe WAS the exterminator in that house. It may have been a traveler or a wolf spider. Either way, they eat roaches and mosquitoes and a whole host of other nasties one usually doesn't want in one's house. They're good people, if a bit funny looking.
I just repeat that to myself over and over, trying to defeat my interior Lizard Brain.

Sorry. I have been bitten by a spider so you can tell yourself whatever you want. I will continue to pound them to itsy bitsy pieces.

big_giant_head, the thing that was almost exterminated in that house was ME! I almost had a heart attack. I tried to tell myself the same thing for many years (and I know it is true) but I finally gave up. They simply have too many legs and are not welcome in my home. :) I will skirt them if I am outside in their territory, but if they are in mine........ (evil chuckle)
I, too, gennidad, have been bitten by a spider. It was actually a pretty serious bite (I had to get shots and it left a scar), but fortunately not by a brown recluse or anything that venomous.
My husband still gets aggravated with me for killing them and he will remove them to a safe place if he spots them first. He just can't understand why I can't see the good in them.

Lots of spiders where I live. They aren't huge, but those suckers do bite--a lot. I can't even count how many spider bites I've had. Afterward, they hurt and itch and swell to sometimes amazing proportions.
But still, they are more an annoyance than anything else. Like a mosquito on steroids.

I live in the land of the black widow and the brown recluse. I leave spiders alone outside but inside.....

Back to the subject of this thread....Oh...wait a minute....there's a spider [CRUNCH, SPLAT]. Ok.
Since I didn't land a job this year, it looks like I need to apply in Mississippi, Alabama, and North Dakota. And maybe I'll toss in some applications to Alaska, Arkansas, Louisianna, Texas, and Utah.
The rest of you, just keep applying exclusively to those big city RI's and prestigious SLAC's. This might just work!
