What are your stories about really, really cheap universities?
I had a university put me up at the YMCA. And it had me call them back so they could reject me.
Really. I'm glad they did after that.

I currently work at an (unnamed) university in a non-teaching capacity. When a former director took over our division, they started cracking down on personal calls. We all got little invoices, asking that we reimburse the dept. for all the calls we made over the prior month. 20 cents here, 87 cents there. I paid in pennies and nickels.

Oh snap. They tried that at my school, and the school is in such an expensive area that many people live in long-distance areas. This was brought up at an all-college meeting, and I was so miffed, I wrote out a check for $1.87, walked up the aisle, and gave it to the president right in front of everybody. The urban legend is now that I threw a check at the president. They laid off that policy, however.

In my former department (a well-endowed (separately endowed) dept with a foundation account > $2million), one dept head was so worried about budget that we had to ask to get anything, including gem clips and pens...

*seconds the request to name names!* I once interviewed at a NYC university that, to my great surprise, made me put the highly expensive hotel on my own credit card (I got reimbursed 3 months later). I had no idea this was going to happen and since my card was charged up to the max, the same card got refused the following morning when I had to pay for my own pancake breakfast. The entire interview went like that. My "host" forgot when my plane was taking off the next day so I never even got dinner (had to eat a $10 nasty LaGuardia saran-wrapped sandwich). Oh, and after 4 years I'm still waiting to hear whether or not I got the job. Jerks.

There was also, some time ago, when the University of Oklahoma phoned...to thank me for applying. I was based in Canada at the time but on a research trip to Europe. Someone took the call for me, mentioned I was in Europe at the time, and that was that. The person who took the message had the impression the caller was holding back a bit.
Anyone had a personal phone call to thank you for applying? I think that's a first.

I had a campus interview in the city where I live so there were no travel expenses other than gas and parking. They made me pay for parking in their own garage. I didn't mind the couple of bucks, but I know they have a simple internal procedure for taking care of that expense when they want to, so it simply underscored their cheapness for me. No, I didn't get the job either.

I was on a campus interview once where they taking pretty good care of me. I was, however, internally aghast when one of the people I was interviewing with told me that part of the process they went through for a Vice President level position involved renting a conference room at the airport, interviewing candidates there and putting them back on a plane.
I think I must have sat there with a dazed look on my face as she bragged about how they went through scads of candidates in one day. I couldn't imagine anyone doing something like that for such an important position so I asked a few questions encouraging her to continue so I could confirm I heard correctly.
As I said, I felt they were seeing to my needs very well so there is no way I have been able make the story jibe with my experience. Even if they wanted something more formal than a phone interview for the initial stage, I can't imagine that they didn't alienate candidates by making them invest more time in travel than in the interview.

Oh, please. Name names! One of the "SUNY" campuses 3 years ago: B&B with a shared bath and a 7 a.m. breakfast meeting. That was a near disaster as the couple next door used it continuously from 5:30 until 6:30... one SC member happily told me that candidates loved the B&B and offerred that the room with the private bath was 20.00 more per night! He was proud of the savings. Beyond the bathroom issue? The place was old, worn, and not too clean. The "hosts" didn't have any breakfast or coffee until I was leaving at 7 a.m. when the schedule said 6:15. They were apologetic: they'd "stayed up late watching a movie." 'nuff said.

When I interviewed two years ago, I was put up in one of the faculty's spare bedrooms.

Actually, the 'fly-in' first interview for high level positions is quite common. Let's the committee see the candidate in person before bringing them on campus to meet with lots and lots of folks. Also lets the candidate meet enough folks to decide whether they are willing to go public as a candidate.
