Someone suggested she/he/it (s/h/it) instead of hu.
Hu is dying out anyway. Kudzu is still going strong.
Or just take a friggin' minute to think about your sentence construction: "Dear Forumites: One of my colleagues, whose gender I don't to reveal for some obscure reason, has been making my life a living hell. First my colleague forgot to erase the chalkboard, and then this person left the toilet seat in the wrong position, and finally my bothersome coworker made fun of my attempt to construct a gender-neutral language! What should I do about this wretch?" Each of the bolded passages could have been written as "hu" but what is the need?

eh, why bother with all those slashes (which I hate more than hu): sheit works well, and has a potentially useful double meaning. I kinda like sheit. With my hillbilly accent, it sounds like what I say when I step in it. Uh huh! That's the beauty, and it is great for those times when you really have trouble believing that this particular sheit is your colleague!

I don't require my students to hu. But I do suggest it to my best ones.
Regarding Wikipedia, I thought there was an entry on hu. Looking at it more closely, I realized I had just completely misunderstood the entry on "Hu Shih". (j/k)

See the above line. I have not yet pressed save. Who needs to be cited?

Now, we are back to all texts excluding women. [...] If you don't like hu, don't use it! No, we are not "back to" texts excluding women. The point is that, in some contexts, the pronoun "he" is correctly used in reference to people, in general -- just as "man" can be used to mean mankind, all genders included. As for your suggestion that those of us who don't like "hu" are free to not use it, well, you are right, of course. I, for one, do not use it. However, if I want to continue to participate in the discussions here, I have to read posts using it. Doing so slows me down, they are difficult to read, and "hu" always distracts me at least somewhat from whatever the posters thought they were trying to say.

Someone must have a bet on somewhere that they can get the word "hu" to appear in this forum 10,000 times over the course of a year and is planting these threads.

Fortunately we don't have to make up silly new words to do it.

I think I'm going to start using Vietnamese pronouns. They are specific to sex, age, familial relationship, and social status of the speaker and the spoken about.

I disagree about "hus" as plural. Check this out: http://www.hupronoun.org/We humbly submit a new word to fill this void: "hu", a third person singular, non gender-specific pronoun. Its variants include "hus" [I prefer "hux"], "hume", and "huself". cbl
