This "hu" business just has to stop.  It's beyond silly. (Wikipedia doesn't even have a page on it.)

Not even my worst students intentionally use fake words to make political statements.

Is the language really that difficult?

Like strategery?  Misunderestimated?

Eschew the hu.

You know, I sometimes wish that I had gone to war over hu the way I did over capitalization and grammar in the early days of these boards. I could have made a difference, perhaps. But I hesitated, and we are all poorer for it. Now it is like kudzu or some other exotic weed, noxious but too widespread for any effective control measures. I blame myself.

But you can make jelly out of kudzu.

Is there faulty strategery behind the cyclical attempts to convince hu-lovers to stop using hu in their forum-speak?

Has the serial poster perhaps misunderestimated the effectiveness of such monthly threads?

I don't know, Iomhaigh. It's just so tiresome to keep going around the same bend over and over.

Oh, well, if Wikipedia doesn't recognize it...

The Wikipedia comment was sarcastic, of course.

From the early responses, I gather this is old ground.  I apologize for bringing up a touchy subject.  But then again, civilization (and sanity) needs constant vigilance.

One question: do the hu lovers use it in class and require its use from their students?

Please tell me no.

Here's my guiltfree little secret: I read "hu" to myself as "he," as a generic "he," which under the old sexist grammar conventions meant "he and/or she."

If you see "hu" and think "he," the reading's easy, and it makes as much sense as it ever did.

Does anybody know what has happened to Pedant?  Pedant seems to be missing.

Oh, no apologies necessary.  I love the carnage on the hu threads!

I make my students copy all my quirks.  That's how they can show how much they adore me, and thus, earn As.

Oh, what fun! nhaven1, welcome to the forums!

Everyone will recall that it was a thread very much like this one that nearly resulted in my banishment from the forums. Thus, we shall not mention the disease that shall not be named, even as well all bask in our private and uncensorable knowledge that it is rampant.

Similarly, I only allow late papers if they follow the rules of hu-diddyness. Oh, and they have to use "hux" not "hus." That's my preference.

I find "hu" mildly annoying, and prefer the s/he, which, if I'm remembering correctly, was approved by MLA about 15 years ago.  (And if MLA says it's okay, then I'm following them off that cliff.)

However, I have issues with the punctuation of "hu."  Why "hu's"  instead of "his" or hers"?  What is "hum"?  What is "hux"?  What the hell?

I am a huge fan of hu users who accidentally slip up and use the actual gender of the person in question, and then switch back to hu.  That's really awesome.
