Is there faulty strategery behind the cyclical attempts to convince hu-lovers to stop using hu in their forum-speak?

Has the serial poster perhaps misunderestimated the effectiveness of such monthly threads?

Clearly, the monthly threads have so far been ineffective.  However, just as clearly, the continued use of "hu" has been ineffective in making it any less irritating.

larryc:  I will share the blame with you for not speaking up sooner.  I first thought it would go away on its own after a few days or a week or two.  Obviously, I was wrong about that.

Does anybody know what has happened to Pedant?  Pedant seems to be missing.

I am not missing. I am often a silent observer of human follies.

Look: People who use "hu" feel strongly about it and are pretty much totally unwilling to give it up. People who don't like "hu" feel just as strongly about their dislike of it, and are pretty much totally unwilling to stop going on the offensive to have its use stopped.

Neither side is apparently willing to give an inch to the other. That the use of "hu" has persisted here for something like 8 months shows that there is some measurable popular support for the concept. Clearly, there is also some vocal opposition. There is some merit in each view.

Absolutely nothing is to be gained from further argument. No minds will be changed. The most that will happen is that people will think even worse of each other than they already do.

Please, I beg of you, let it lie.

I'm going to start using "zhe."

This is popular amongst some queer activists I know.

I have managed to obtain secret footage of larryc's cat posting the above remark under larry's moniker:

Here's my guiltfree little secret: I read "hu" to myself as "he," as a generic "he," which under the old sexist grammar conventions meant "he and/or she."

If you see "hu" and think "he," the reading's easy, and it makes as much sense as it ever did.

The Fiona

I like that, just read hu as he and respond from there.  It resists the hu without derailing the conversation.  Let's do it.

Hu = He. Spread the word.

Okay, larry. If "hu" is being undermined, then I vote for "zie" instead.

"Z" for short.

I'm actually encouraged that so many have suggested that they--or whatever word is used for "a group of individuals" on this site--are on my side.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind, but people should be told when they are walking around with toilet paper on their shoe or lettuce between their teeth.

For the rest of us, I suggest we start using the word "prolly."  It's already in wide circulation, especially among our students.  We'd be doing them a favor.

Well, I'll never tell, but I hope that zie notes how dumb it is to have this argument in the "In The Classroom" board.

Duh.

LarryC just put the women's movement back about 20 years.

Women were finally recognized in APA with a plea for gender inclusive language. Don't forget the women in your language, the text pleads.

Now, we are back to all texts excluding women.

Someone suggested she/he/it (s/h/it) instead of hu.

Hu is dying out anyway.  Kudzu is still going strong.

eh, why bother with all those slashes (which I hate more than hu):  sheit works well, and has a potentially useful double meaning.

I kinda like sheit.  With my hillbilly accent, it sounds like what I say when I step in it.
