Greetings everyone. First post. Allow me to introduce myself. I have a doctorate in Child, Youth & Family Studies, am incredibly stoked to teach and do some research, have both CC experience and one-semester experience teaching 100-200 level Sociology at a large midwestern state university. Early 30s.Yadda yadda yadda.

Oops. Darn enter button. I'm wanting to know if this is a place where I can get some straight talk about the academic world. I would like to ask serious questions about culture, experience, idealologies, and of course most pressing at the moment, the job search. To be frank, I'm not looking for bulls*** answers you know? I've got some real energy I want to put into this as a chosen career and seem so hopelessly lost in understanding what appears to be a bizarre and dysfunctional culture. Looking to learn here.

Shoot, well, based on the first post and your gender and inclination (although the "straight talk" subject line might be a clue) I was going to offer to introduce you to one of my single adult children, but you want JOB advice, I'm seeing.
Thank you everyone. I will be posting my questions just as I rethink how I want to craft them. You people sound neato.

These be snark infested waters.
Things that make you go aaarrgh, matey!
So now we have neato, naked mole rats, and
pirates in the same thread. Top that!
Seriously, the fora are a great source of information, good advice, shared experiences, and comfort for those of us who have been job-hunting this year. Best of luck, 72!
