Greetings everyone. First post. Allow me to introduce myself. I have a doctorate in Child, Youth & Family Studies, am incredibly stoked to teach and do some research, have both CC experience and one-semester experience teaching 100-200 level Sociology at a large midwestern state university. Early 30s.Yadda yadda yadda.

Oops. Darn enter button. I'm wanting to know if this is a place where I can get some straight talk about the academic world. I would like to ask serious questions about culture, experience, idealologies, and of course most pressing at the moment, the job search. To be frank, I'm not looking for bulls*** answers you know? I've got some real energy I want to put into this as a chosen career and seem so hopelessly lost in understanding what appears to be a bizarre and dysfunctional culture. Looking to learn here.

Welcome to the forums.
To get some straight answers, you need to ask some straight questions. A general "tell me what you know" won't lead you to the answers you seek.
Also try browsing the forums--you may find that some of your pressing questions have been addressed previously.
Most of the time, if you ask an insightful question, the foumites will respond accordingly. If the question lacks merit, there may be a lot of snarky answers. Just look at the "Do I staple my CV?" post as an example. These are forumites just blowing off steam after a hard day in academe.

Yes, this is the place. Be aware, however, that 99% of the time, there is not a "right" answer to any question related to the job search and that the inexact nature of responses to your questions does not make them "bulls*** answers." Now, there are some questions that DO have correct answers. Everyone knows that you paper clip a CV.

If you post your story but no actual question, people might start making up their own story for you. Take a look at the Favorite university thread. People there got downright silly. That is one of my favorite threads. What is it that you want to know? Now, there are some questions that DO have correct answers. Everyone knows that you paper clip a CV.
Trabb, stop giving inaccurate information! You use a pink staple and a naked mole rat to keep the CV together.

Why only straight talk? Don't be so hetero-centric.
(I am kidding you. It is the end of the semester. We all have our snark on.)

Does that mean CBL can't post? I heard a rumor that she is bent. She is less likely to be broken now that she has given up on the idea of using a chain saw to take down a large tree in her yard.

You need to read two books:
1. The Academic Job Search Handbook
2. Getting to Yes (about negotiations)
Both are available at Amazon and other online bookstores.
Reading these will not make you an expert, per se, but they will give you a good feel for the academic hiring process. It only seems bizarre b/c you don't understand it.
About the job search, this is late in the season to begin looking. Most academic jobs are advertised in the fall and winter, and tail off into the spring. Also, if you want to teach soc, the usual requirement is a doctorate. Some CCs hire people w/o doctorates, but don't bank on it.

I am most certainly bent, but I'm willing to talk about straight subjects here. It seems that's what all threads tend toward anyway. We can't talk about multiple female orgasms, though, even if they are the only right answer to serious questions about culture, experience, "idealologies," and the all-important job search. Which of course they are. We can talk about self massage, though. Just don't... well, you know. At least not more than once. Let's get to it! cbl

I do understand the hiring process and I still think it's bizarre. :) I agree, however, that this forum is neato.
