I've been pretty much promised a job and have been waiting on the official offer for a couple of weeks. (I know the department well and was kept in the loop on the search details.)

E-Mail just in:
"Sadly, it looks like OEOD lost SCC’s request for [position title].  Our OEOD coordinator told SCC yesterday to resend the paperwork to OEOD.  So, we’re just waiting for approval from OEOD."

That's the entire e-mail. What does this mean?! What if they don't get approval?! I cannot take this. I am bawling into my Diet Coke. It has been three months since my son died and KARMA OWED ME THIS F*CKING JOB. That's it. I'm taking a 24-hour leave to the land of hysterics. I cannot do this. *&^*(*^ ^%$## $%%$ %%^&!!!!

Breathe....Breathe....  It sounds like an administrative delay, not anything else.  Just looking like a paperwork hassle..... Which is a hurdle, but it does not mean much more than that.  Notice that they wanted them to resend the paperwork.  It's going to be okay...

Relax.

I don't think this nearly as horrible as you think it is. Yes, it can still fall through, but all this email communicates is that there was a paperwork snafu.

You said you "pretty much" have the job. It doesn't sound like anything has changed.

First of all, I'm very sorry for your loss.  I can't imagine the pain.  Second, the same thing (more or less) happened to me in the last month, and two days ago I signed the offer letter and mailed it back.  Look at it this way, if you didn't get the job, they wouldn't be telling you anything.  Just, as the other poster said, breathe.

Hang in there.

I'm an expert at interpreting documents; it's what I used to do for a living.  That email does not mean you've lost your job; it means that some genius in admin lost the paperwork for your job, and now the gang down in the department is so miffed at them, they decided to let you know that it wasn't them who screwed this up, it was the bureaucrats.  Your formal offer paperwork will be on the way soon, as if they were irritated enough with their own admin to let you in on on the bureaucratic stumble, they'll also be angry enough to make sure it gets through this time.

I lost my father almost three months ago to the day, and knowing what that felt like in my gut (broken glass), I cannot fathom what it must feel like to lose a child; my condolences and may God comfort you.

You have the job.  You are fine.  You are fine.  You have the job.

With any luck, though, the idiots who lost the paperwork might be in jeopardy.

You are fine.

We are with you.  You are fine.

The job is still there. The paper-pushers just screwed-up.

As the father of an infant, I got tears in my eyes just at the mention of your son's passing. You have my deepest condolences.

touched, hang in there. I'm sure it's just an administrative balls-up and that the letter will arrive soon, though I know how hard it is not to fall victim to paranoia at this stage of proceedings.

I'm so sorry for your loss - we are indeed with you, and thinking of you.

Absolutely agree that it's a paperwork snafu - at some places it's way more common than not. I know it's nerve wracking, but hang in there - the paperwork just needs to be sent through again.

Sending a huge hug and my condolences to you on the loss of your son.

huxangel, everything is okay. Please take a hot bubble bath with some chunky monkey and some multiple-orgasm-inducing toys and get a good night's sleep.

Seriously. Baths, ice cream, and orgasms can solve anything.

Calm down my pastafarian friend. This is boilerplate for "a secretary screwed up and your contract will be a little late."

So sorry about your son.
