And the job losses

It affects all of us one way or another.
I remember other recessions but never one that hit so many industries at once.
The pharmaceutical companies have been merging for years.
The automakers are in big trouble.
Even the computer/ microprocessor companies like Intel are laying off.
And we have been discussing the university hiring freezes on another thread.
Where does it end?

My sister called yesterday. When I asked how she was, she said: "Well, Mike isn't home yet. That means he probably hasn't been layed off today!" Her husband has worked for IBM for over twenty years, has always had promotions, positive performance reviews, etc. and even he is worrying about being let go. That's scary!

We have been girding for possible layoffs at my institution for about 3 months now. We have been waiting on word from our State Legislature on the size of cuts to education to balance this years' and next years' budget.
Early word is starting to look very good that layoffs won't be either necessary or at the very worst too deep (into faculty). We are all breathing a huge sigh of relief.
On another note, my neighbors were forced out of their house over this past weekend. It's sad to look across the street to an empty home. Apparently their car was repoed a few weeks back. I'm glad I missed that scene.

I plan to get up tomorrow. And the morning after that too. And each morning after that.

Sometimes, that's all you can do. Keep getting up. I was laid off almost a year ago. I understand.

My neighbors just put a "For Rent" sign up. Wife lost her job. Husband got cut back to 3 days per week. They just bought the place last year and have been doing significant rehab on it after numerous problems were uncovered. Our uni is doing everything possible to avoid layoffs and it appears, for the short term, they have.
