Poll
Question: Who the heck likes that nasty green licorice-flavored Nyquil?
I do! I do! I love it!
Not me! I only drink the red stuff.
I don't care. I'm sick. I take what we've got.
Nyquil? What's Nyquil?

Some people have bad reactions to Flonase (I actually use the generic version, but still) like sinus infections and headaches.  After several years of using this stuff, and Astelin, I get....oh, dear.  Should I really say?  It may be TMI.  Let's just say snot becomes reddish at times, mainly in very dry rooms.  My pharmacist says that's normal due to using a nasal spray, as the nose contains pretty delicate veins.

But what I don't have is very much congestion, and a side benefit is that, despite a cold, I'm pretty clear-headed (oh, I know, you all could argue with me on that one, but I'm talking snot levels here, not overall intelligibility).  Anything that lets me breathe and stay awake is fine by me.

I am allergic to tree pollen and mold. I live in a swamp. I am therefore, screwed. What I've cobbled together that kinda works is:
AM-- claritin D (with REAL pseudafed from the pharmacist)
PM- 2 benedryls and a mucinex.

Even if I'm still snotty, I'm not so awake that it really bothers me.

One of my fave pals is a research MD and swears to me that all the fancy expensive stuff is less effective than benedryl for most allergies. YMMV.

Once when I couldn't find Nyquil in the store, I got something orange--I think it was Comtrex, instead; shortly after taking it and going to bed, I started shaking like a leaf--so it definitely had an ingredient or two that was not good for me. Mileage varies a lot with these things.

Oh, and I'm sorry if I ruined anyone's "placebo effect" of the nonalcoholic Nyquil! Now you'll just have to use actual alcohol before bedtime--medicinally, of course.

I am going to the doc tomorrow to see about this latest bout of allergies, and I wonder: do they still do that testing thing where they can tell exactly what you are allergic to? I'm starting to think that I'm allergic to the dog and maybe to trees/grass/sunshine, but I wonder what they do to figure it all out.

And then, can I get shots instead of taking all these meds every day? Does anyone get shots?

I just want to breathe... and sleep... and breathe... and sleep... and not be grumpy... and breathe...

Oh, CBL!!!  I don't know about the shots, but please tell us what happens.

Today I expressed my allergies through full-body sneezes.  It has not been a pretty day.

I'm sorry! That sounds terrible. But at least you can count those sneezes as exercise, given that they do contract every muscle in your body like that.

I'll let everyone know if the doc has a new magic way of ridding us of misery. =)

I had this happen to me too!  I think that I overlapped a daytime medication and a nighttime medication a little too much and had too much pseudoephedrine in my system (this was before those meds went behind the counter).  It made my heart race a bit on and off for an hour-ish.  After that episode, I've tried to stay away from one-size-fits-all cold relievers.  I buy individual meds for my most common symptoms and take the combination that suits whatever flavor of plague I happen to come down with.

CBL, my condolences. Allergies suck.

Yes, they still do the testing thing. Except now, they don't usually do it with needles. Instead, they have a plastic contraption, loaded with the allergens, and they sort of push that into your arm. They write on your skin with a marker, around the allergens, to indicate what's what. If you don't react to that, and the allergist suspects that you are allergic to something, they'll inject a small amount of that allergen under the skin on your forearm, and watch that. They are looking for (in either case) a swelled-up patch, like a mosquito bite. It's a relatively painless process, but I was itching so bad it almost hurt when they injected one allergen under my skin and then left me in the room for two minutes.

Depending on the severity of the allergies, and your preferences for treatment, you may be able to get shots instead of meds. You might have to be more forceful about it, though. Shots also may seem easier, but aren't too easy, as they involve frequent trips to the allergist's office. You have to wait there for 1/2 hour after every shot, to ensure that you're not having a reaction. Seems that shots vs. meds is six of one, half dozen of the other.

Good luck!

Well, I'm back, and the doc gave me handfuls and handfuls of drugs, and 2 scripts, and a shot.

My tookus hurts, by the way. She said it would, and she didn't lie. I don't regret having it done, though, because it will be an effective form of snottraception.

I then had a "moment" with the pharmacist when I asked about the "DO NOT BREASTFEED WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICATION" warning for one of the meds, and he made a big fuss about the fact that I'm still breastfeeding even though the cbboy is a preschooler.

That was fun. I love educating folks about breastfeeding when they try to shame me. Fools.

(Need I even mention that he was clearly suffering from the disease that shall not be named? I didn't think so.)

Every once in a while this has happened to me when I have taken nyquil or advil/tylenol PM.  It doesn't happen often, and I don't know why it happened those times and not others (I couldn't figure anything out at the time), but it is not a pleasant experience.

I hope the meds are effective snottraceptives!  I just love it when people follow the advice of my tag line.

And I love the breast-feeding consciousness raising.  Pharmacists are really quite conservative, you know!  :~)

It was understood.  Whether or nor you breastfeed cbboy is your business.  Why do some people feel the need to comment on others' choices?

I hope the new allergy medicine works and you feel better.
