Welcome to The Chronicle's forums. By participating, you have agreed to comply with The Chronicle of Higher Education's user agreement.

Our forums are intended for college faculty members, graduate students, administrators, and other professionals in academe for the purpose of sharing information and advice about various aspects of academic work and life.

Any posts deemed inappropriate may be removed at the discretion of the moderators without notice. Failure to comply with any of the terms in the user agreement may result in a warning or revocation of posting privileges. Posting spam of any kind in a post or in your signature line (whether it's commercial spam or an attempt to use the forums to sell or promote your books, Web site, etc.) will result in an immediate ban.

Notes about netiquette:

This is a large and diverse community that includes a wide range of views. Voice your opinions as strongly as you would like, but be considerate of others and keep it clean. Just because someone disagrees with your position on an issue does not make it a personal attack on you. Criticizing an idea is acceptable; attacking a person as an "idiot," a "jerk," or as any number of more colorful monikers is unacceptable -- even if the person attacked you first, or you feel they "deserved it," or you think they're a troll.

Posters may e-mail one another through the forums using the personal-message function, but may not post those privately sent messages in the forums without the original sender's permission.

Please use proper punctuation and capitalization. Don't post in all caps. It's rude.

Don't start threads designed to attack other posters. Don't try to impersonate another poster by copying his or her username. Don't stalk another poster (i.e., don't follow that poster from thread to thread seeking to undermine or attack his or her comments).

Don't post personal information about another poster without their consent. Don't use the forums to out your fellow posters or to out the identity of someone referred to in a post.

Don't post the same thread in every forum. If you're unsure about where to post your thread, ask the moderators.

Please refrain from writing entire posts in a foreign language. The occasional foreign phrase is fine, but posts should primarily be written in English.

Hijacking threads (to promote your own pet cause or to correct other posters' misspellings or grammar mistakes) is rude.

Moderating forums is an inexact science. We try our best to be fair and to make this a civil and welcoming place for academics. You can help us by reporting inappropriate posts -- just click on the 'Report to Moderator'  button -- but please don't sidetrack a thread in the forums with comments about other posters' conduct or label other posters as trolls. It's not your job. Let us handle any violations.

There's a place to talk about the boards and that's in the "Questions, Comments?" forum. If you have a question or a concern about our policies, feel free to contact us privately through the PM (private message) system or post a message in the "Questions, Comments?" forum. Don't hijack a thread in one of the other forums to discuss technicalities about the enforcement of the rules or to complain about perceived mistreatment by the moderators. And if you do, don't be surprised to find your posts deleted. We have a forum for you to register concerns, so please use it.

As moderators, we prefer to get out of the way of the discussions. So we'll bow out at this point and invite you to join the forums.
