Has there been a new shooting, bibliothecula? The only news I found was about a shooting that happened near there in August, and that guy (William Morva) was caught back then.

Holy Crap, it is front page at CNN: University Shooting Police: At least 20 killed At least 20 people were killed in two shootings when a lone gunman opened fire on the Virginia Tech University campus in Blacksburg on Monday, police said. Police said they believe the shooter also is dead. It now sounds like 22 dead, including the suspected shooter. Two locations, two hours apart.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I should add that I've been listening to CNN and their affiliate near VA Tech.

Oh my God.
That's horrible.
When I was in grad school, there was a shooting on our campus and only one person was killed--still it was incredibly traumatic for everyone, and it took a long time to feel safe again.
So sorry to hear about this.
Thoughts are with any forumites from VT.

I find the following from the CNN link to be disturbing:
"Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online."
Reminded me of Columbine students calling local TV news stations.

I'm at a nearby university where many students and staff have friends and relatives at VT. I don't know how to go into class at 1. A colleague just came back from class saying that one of her students was in hysterics because she couldn't contact a friend of hers.

Just be there.
When I was in that kind of situation, having to teach later that same day, I scrapped the lesson plan and just tried to be there for my students. It maybe sounds kind of stupid, but I felt rather idiotic trying to teach anything when there was such a huge elephant in the room.
Just see how you feel when you get there.

Sorry, all--I should have posted the CNN link. At the time I caught the news it was 1 dead, shooter on the loose...I've been watching updates since then.
Elsie, go and listen to your students. You'll know how better to handle things once you're there. My thoughts are with you.

A few years back, there was a shooting in the engineering department at San Diego State. Is there something about engineering education that is more difficult or stressful than other disciplines?
It's hard to think about much else right now.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone associated with Virginia Tech and especially the family and friends of the victims. In addition to the 20 reported dead, they are saying another 17 have been wounded. How could one person cause that much carnage?
