OK, I wrote a friend at UNC and apparently the potential law issue centers around the fact that the Group of 88, while "perceived" by many to have attacked the Lacrosse team, did indeed encourage and publically thank protesters who posted wanted fliers containing photos of all or nearly all of the Lacrosse players.  If this is true the case is here.  I am told by my friend that the wait is because the lawyers for the players want to set the case up so it goes beyond slander and will allow the players to not only have a civil case, but a criminal case under NC hate law provisions.  A double hit if you will.

My question is: If the 88 are taken to court will Duke do anything to come to their defense or simply watch them twist in the wind.  My view is that, if this happens, the will watch 'em swing.

Once again, I admit I don't have access to any hard and fast facts here.  There is a tremendous amount of speculation here, so we'll all have to wait and see.

I would just love to see 88 faculty members facing civil and criminal charges.  Hilarious!

What complete a$$holes.

Hate crime? Isn't that for one race attacking another? Were all the profs black or something? That part sounds really stupid and like an abuse of the hate crime statute.

I doubt seriously if Duke has 88 black professors on its faculty.

And, I bet Duke defends the profs in a lawsuit.  Not because they agree with them but because if they don't, the athletes will probably go after them too because the profs were employed by Duke and used their status as Duke professors to comment.  It will be cheaper for Duke to pay off the players than defend it self against 88 lawsuits from tenured faculty members if they try to fire them.

Hate crime statutes are stuipid to begin with, so they might as well be used for stupid purposes.
