I know there's no substitute for trying these things on, but can anyone recommend a make and model of sports (or sports-like) bra that is sufficiently supportive for the active, reasonably-well-endowed (C-cup) woman, but doesn't result in the "dreaded uni-boob look"? And is comfortable, to boot? (Bonus points if it contains cotton and/or can be bleached.)

Nama, if you are that endowed you might find a lot of stuff at VS (Victoria's Secret). Pretty much all their designs are for C cup women. Not that it'll ever happen to me, but I'd rather have the uni-boob than the cone look.

Someone might have already suggested this but there is a great company called Title nine ( www.titlenine.com) that carries really good (and tested) bras for active women in all cup ranges. gloxinia

Who said I was? ;) I'm kind of surprised about VS - I would have thought that they catered to slightly smaller women who wanted their bras to create more cleavage. Will have to look into it. I'm with you on the cone look - ugh. Have flipped thorugh Title IX catalog, but if I remember correctly, it's a bit on the pricy side - but then again, I'm quite a cheapskate when it comes to undergarments.

They are a little spendy. Sometimes I look on there to read the reviews and then find those bras on sale other places. Ultimately though it's worth it to me to keep the girls where they should be while I'm out running or whatever. Gloxinia

Who's with me? Let's ban underwires. Can't stand them!
Sorry, I can't join in, much as I'd like to. I've needed the wires since I was about 13. Not even the best sports bra has the support I need. Alas, my cup runneth over. You're not standing, er...sagging, alone. A C cup by 8th grade, DD by 11th, back pain before high school graduation. --oh, I ran, lifted weights, played soccer for some time, played volleyball and sand volleyball in the summer, and cheered. OUCH! I often wore two sports bras--one had underwires in it and extra hooks. Uniboob? I didn't care. I just wanted to see my toes! (I'm really short and petite). Now, thanks to time, age, a few changes I didn't plan for, I'm back in a 34 CC. Underwires that fit well are necessary. Otherwise, the girls swing low...

Go to sporting goods stores, or even Macy's in the sporting section. Some of them have a divider of sorts that prevents the uni-boob. ;)
Like I said, the lined ones are particularly comfortable and help prevent others from seeing ummmm whether you are cold or not.
I love the Nike ones, but they are pricey as well.

I'm a cheapskate about a lot of things, but it's worth it to spend a bit more on quality bras. They tend to be more comfortable, more suportive, and last longer. I'm in the middle, not too big, not too small, and I like Warners, but I also like underwires as long as the wires don't start poking out of the lining.

I hate underwires because my anatomy, for some reason, causes the dang things to jab me in the breast bone. Ouch! Doesn't matter if they are poking out of the lining or not.

I hate them too. Sadly, I often have no real choice but to use them.

Title Nine has awesome bras--I wear some of the so-called sports bras for everyday--and, believe it or not, so does Target. They stock lots of nice styles, both plain and fancy, in tons of sizes. I get some everyday bras there as well because it's one of the few places that carries my size and doesn't cost a fortune. For larger sizes, Lane Bryant is a good place too--plenty of sizes and styles, and shop assistants who are the same size as the customers and great at helping you find things that look good and fit well.
One thing I will say is that every woman should be sized by a professional bra-fitter. Usually there's at least one woman working in department stores who can do this for you. I read last year that something like 90% of women are wearing the wrong size.
