Hello - I'm seeking advice on whether to bother applying for a job in the humanities at a top UK university.  The position description fits me nicely but the timing is off - the job posting says the position is "available" beginning 9/1/07.  However, I've signed a contract for a one-year fellowship in the US that ends in spring 08.  Do UK universities customarily permit candidates to defer start dates, as is common in the US, or would such a request be unusual?  Your thoughts much appreciated.

As you might guess, it depends.  My hunch is that they're looking for someone who has research to contribute to the fortcoming RAE which would mean that they'd need you to be on the books before October.  If it's really as good as you say it is, apply.  There's no shame in turning down a 1-year gig for a better one.  We have the expression 'burning bridges' for a reason!

It's worth applying but I'd say the chance of a one year postponement is slim unless you're in a hard-to-fill field. They probably have teaching to cover.

It's not procrastination. It's "just in time" delivery.

Nutso is the new normal.
