We usually give first choice of slots to the cadidate who is travelling the furthest (farthest?) to the interview.

I've been rejected from the first, second, third, and fourth interview slots.  It means nothing.  Knock them dead.

Moral of the story:
Never be the first visitor, or the second, or the third, or the fourth, on campus.

Psychologists have found that there is a primacy effect and a recency effect. Basically people remember the first and the last better than the middle. According tot hat it is better to be first or last, although i would hope that depts try to be professional about this and pay close attention to all candidates.
