Anyone working in Switzerland?
«

Does anyone have any experience working in Switzerland? I am untenured in the humanities at Pretty Good U in the US, have basic German, very good French, and pretty fluent Italian. I have my sights set on Ticino as the place where I would have the best chance; I have a couple of contacts but only one of them is actually a "professor" with some power (though not much). Are there any good American universities in Switzerland that might be hiring?
Thanks !!! Quilty

If your German is strong enough, you could try the nearby Universitaet Innsbruck, in Austria. It's a reputable university, but the humanities programs are weak enough that it would probably be quite manageable to find a job there. It's also a charming city.

Thanks for your reply. But I thought the German speaking world was so packed with brilliant, unemployed academics that Austria would also be filled to capacity. Do you know where they advertise their jobs?
Thanks so much, Quilty

I taught at a few American schools in Switzerland. I don't recommend it long term. The majority of teaching is done by adjuncts and the caliber of student is not very high.

Sorry, Quilty, I'm not sure where they advertise. I have just heard this from an acquaintance who used to be employed there, but has since moved to America.

You might look into Franklin College. They do not offer tenure but do have longterm contracts. The school is in a beautiful location with an interesting array of students. The administration is a bit disorganized but the view makes up for it.
